hi,

just recently started noticing that when i download some stuff off t'internet (microsoft and nvidia, two examples) my speed tends to start off fast (well fast for my connection) at around 280Kbytes/s but then it decreases as it downloads? just downloading new drivers from the nvidia website and it started at 280 and dropped steadily all the way down to 50! :/ however i then cancelled it and started it again and it started at over 2mbytes/s  and dropped quickly down to about 280 and stayed there?

im confuzzled :/

This could be an example of your browser performing link prefetching, i.e. the download may have been in progress before you actively clicked it.

I guess there could be some rate limiting going on elsewhere between yourself and the server; to get an idea of the speed you should be getting then you need further knowledge on your connection sync rate.

hmm yes i had a feeling chrome was lying to me -.-

So on a 40.0 dB line you're currently synced at 2976 kbps with a 10.2 dB SNR margin. This is pretty slow, even for ADSL1 (G.DMT) and could be due to a number of factors including the quality of your telephone line, the modem you're using and whether it's connected to an extension socket.

Ordinarily DSL users would expect a throughput of approximately 85% of sync rate. In your case this would equate to a maximum download speed of about 315 kB/s. However, your upstream sync rate suggests you're on an IPStream package and these are ultimately subject to rate limiting by way of an 'IP Profile'. You should use BT's Speed Test site to confirm if your IP Profile is appropriate for (close to) your sync rate - you can evaluate by checking this page over on kitz.co.uk. Your maximum download speed will then be closer to (IP Profile / 8) kB/s.

well i do live in the middle of nowhere :/ at least the connection doesn't drop out at all, never had it lose connection.

my IP profile is 2500 according to BT

so yeh not great :/ but there are NO other services where i live...

this is my exchange... http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/NDSGO

so theres not really much i can do to make it any better?

:(
