weird startup problem

got an old amd xp2500m computer
abit nf7
geil memory etc

the standard setup from a few years back

anyhow
its just developed an irritating problem whereby when turned on it gets to the screen where it says loading personal settings (win xp)
then reboots, after doing this 5 or 6 times it eventually gets into windows and all is fine

this has happened several times now when iv powered up from the pc being off
and also happens if i restart when the pc is on


any ideas???

My parents old machine started doing just that, spent hours trying to solve it, in the end it was a format job. Tried windows repair, system restore, updating drives, installing updates, swapping memory etc all with no joy.
