I have a 1.7 DTI Astra MK4 51 plate.
I was driving home down the dual carriage way when there was suddenly a loss of umph & my engine management light came on. The car drove fine still just with slightly reduced acceleration but then after I had turned the engine off I tried starting it again but it wouldnt start. The starter motor was going, but the engine just wasnt firing up.

I came inside for 20 mins then went back out & tried again & all is perfect. Car starts right away, no management light etc... Any idea what happened? Do you think it'll happen again & leave me stranded waiting for AA? I've done the normal things like check water/oil & stare blankly at the engine! Cant think of what else to do/check..?

See if you can get it scanned for any error codes mate, if the management lights been on there should be something hopefully. Also, has it got the Isuzu engine?, if so these have a lot of problems with the EDU (look for a silver ecu type box bolted to the back of the engine) which cuts all fuel to the pump.
:)

It will have logged a fault, get it read before it expires.

@Jon, I don't know of any other 1.7 derv in the Astra, FIAT only supply them with the 1.9 and 1.2

my vans doing the same thing 1.7 tdi astravan only does it when i hit 80ish mph and more often than not going up hill i've been told it could be something to do with the egr valve?

Isn't this just a standard feature of a Vauxhall? I used to own a Cavalier and Vectra many years ago and they'd both un-ashamedly give me the orange light just randomly. For me a switch off and back on a few minutes later would make things OK for another day or 2.

My money is on this.

My old Corsa (1.6 sport) used to get engine light on sometimes... car ran largely ok. Stop, turn off, turn on, lights gone and car ran fine.

Got it scanned, dead egr valve but never fixed it lol

There is no ECU if it's the "low blow" engine.
Mechanical pump on that sucker.
My money is also on a sooted up EGR valve

Bosses Zafira one went wrong last week, took it off, dumped it in the ultrasonic injector cleaner :D

Good as new after 30 mins of a warm electric bath :)

Yep, dual carriage way is slightly up hill & I was going about 80.
What does the EGR valve do?

Edit: Ok, using google i've found what it does & it seems to be that.
Also found out how to clean it, just waiting to pluck up the courage to do it myself :(
