All over the place
So I decided I would set up a dual boot Windows/Linux system. I have Windows on my SSD with the documents on the HDD, so I made a new partition on the HDD that I would use for Linux. Turned the computer off, unplugged my SSD and booted from the Linux disc. When I was choosing where to put the installation, I remembered I hadn't backed my things up, so I turned the computer off and plugged the SSD back in, but for some reason, it wouldn't let me select it as a boot device but it was there if I went into 'Storage Configuration'. So I turned it off and cleared the CMOS, now I can choose my SSD and my DVD drive as a boot device but not my hard drive! Also, when I turn on the computer, a windows pops up for my hard drive asking what I want to do like if I just plugged in a USB drive.

What is happening here?!

So now I've found out that if I unplug the SSD, the HDD will be available as a boot device, but will disappear when I plug the SSD back in. Any thoughts?

(Could someone please move this to the hard drive section as it is no longer a software issue.)

Have you tried moving the hd to a different sata port.

try and boot the pc in to windows using the ssd and then plug the hd in whilst booted in to windows. sata can be plugged in while pc is running. Go to disk management in computer management once the disk is installed and see what the partitions look like and the status is. If it prompts to format the disk don't do that unless you want to.

somtimes mechanical disks can be problematic like that. Ive had it before where it keeps asking to format the disk as if its corrupt then i turned everything off with no power even psu. And changed the port and started it all up again and it worked perfectly.
