So I have a external 2.5" cheapy Orico Transparent enclosures ones that you can get and for some reason it doesn't read or write correctly on the above motherboard usb ports , either the front panel ones , nor the back ones.

I have recently formatted the system Windows 10 Pro , upgraded to v3.60 BIOS and installed the latest AMD Chipset drivers 2.04.04.111

Now I know the external enclosure works fine as it works on a laptop , and also works fine on the USB C port of the graphics card (RTX 2080 Super)

Any ideas on why the motherboard ports are not picking the enclosure up at all ?

Thanks in advance

Yes it is getting detected in the device manager under 'disk drives'

Also it is getting a drive letter, however for some reason it is refusing to write/read or complete a hard drive benchmark i.e CrystalDiskMark.

After browsing a few files on the drive , it hard locks on the file explorer only to recover in about a minute.

I got a feeling that the B450 chipset might not be compatible with the external enclosures controller or something. Very weird.

So using a micro usb instead of the usb 3.0 micro-b type one , it seems to work , but at the slower usb 2.0 speeds. Even more strange.

Are you running overclocked RAM? Like DDR4 3600 on XMP etc? I have a Tomahawk Max B450 also.

At stock/auto volts or even when I set volts on SOC to say 1.0v I was getting some weird USB drop outs when running 3600mhz XMP, as well as PoST issues. I had to increase volts across SOC/VDDP/VDDG to get stability. Was very weird.

Nah not running overclocked RAM at all , just some Ryzen certified Corsair Vengeance RGB CL16 3200Mhz 2x16GB on normal XMP 1 on the latest BIOS v3.60.

If it's XMP it's classed as overclocked :) if your volts (SOC are set to default/auto) you could try increasing it slightly to see if it help?

Ok ill try running RAM on default 2133Mhz and see what happens. What value shall I run the SOC voltage ?

UPDATE :- actually RAM defaulted to 2667Mhz

Right defaulting the RAM didn't work, still experiencing the same issues , so I will try upping the SOC voltage slightly.

Which HDD did you put in the box? Some hard drives require more power to run, which USB port may fail to provide. Could you also please link the HDD box so we can check the specs?

Thanks MSI Support much appreciated.

Hard Drive
I have tried a few hard drives that I have about, also I have listed the model and power requirements printed

Seagate Momentus XT 500GB - 5V - 0.58A
Samsung SSD 850 EVO MZ075E250 250GB - 5V - 1.4A (Might be a bit too much)
Western Digital 500GB Blue - WD5000LPCX - 5V - 0.55A

As mentioned above , the drives seem to work when using a Micro USB to USB-A cable albeit with slower speeds. When using the supplied Type-B Micro to USB-A Cable it doesn't seem to work properly.

I have multiple of the above HDD boxes , and they all not work on my Tomahawk Max , but totally fine on other computers.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Lustral

I had a similar issue with USB sticks on my B450 Gaming Pro Carbon

It works in safe mode on Windows 10 - you could try this to see if we had the same issue?

I tried it in safe mode , however still doing the same. :( still cant figure it out at all.

Still nada , might just get a new set of boxes . I got an Icy Box case IB-231S which seems to work totally fine.

Hi Lustral, did you get anywhere with this?

I have been having a weird issue with my Jabra Bluetooth headset and via lots of troubleshooting am beginning to think it's something to do with the USB interface on my PC (MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC)
(I use a Jabra Link 380 USB dongle)

Latest BIOS, drivers, etc.

Haven't noticed any other USB issue but use very few USB devices.

Interested to learn how you got on?

Cheers!

Sorry just only saw this response.

The MSI rep didnt get back to me and i havent really progressed it. Im just gonna get another motherboard and not touching MSI stuff again.

I recently formatted my computer along with updating the board to the latest BIOS and installing the latest chipset drivers etc etc. But same issues again with only certain external hard drive enclosures etc etc.

Other USB devices , such as USB Flash sticks , USB NVME / M.Sata Enclosures are fine. I give up on this board.
