My flatmate and I have 10 meg Virgin Cable. However, at night, the speed seems to drop a LOT. A Speedtest.net test during the day, says our download speed is around 10 meg. At night, it says it is around 1.8 meg.

I know Speedtest.net isn't maybe the most reliable test around. However, these speeds don't seem right to me.

It seems like they are throttling our speed quite heavily. Any ideas why? Or how I could fix it?

you have a high ping @79 ms

Well, that was to Derry. Will try again to London. This morning at 8.34am.

I don't know what it would be throttled. I didn't download anywhere near enough data from it to be throttled. What do they count as an actual download for that?

Any data is considered download that you request, any data you send is considered upload.

Uploading a video on youtube will take upload bandwidth, the same as requesting a webpage from a server (but the amount of data you will send will be tiny). Online games also use a lot of upload bandwidth.

Downloading will be something like watching a video, downloading from any HTTP, bit torrent, itunes whatever.

Thanks Dark_Angel. That would be why it's throttling. My flatmate tends to watch things on Youtube. And play those online flash games.

Personally, I download some stuff from time to time. And play online games. Might be worth looking into a speed boost.
