Hiya's,

Posting for a neighbour as this is beyond my limited vista knowledge lol

The lady has vista x86 on (home pro or somert)

When she boots pc and it asks for her password, When password goes in instead of booting to vista desktop, It pops up what looks like a half-sized computer folder with the usual docs/computer/control panel etc etc (just what you get when you click on computer)

When you minimise this the background is black and no mouse clicks etc can do anything to this

Any ideas what the heck she has done to vista ?? lol

I suggested a restore but she's reluctant

Never heard of anything like this (faced the usual bootup errors etc but sheesh this is weird)

Anyone understand what might of caused this (she says she did nothing but i dunno)

Any help/info/ideas would be great

Many Thanks

Very strange problem. It seems Explorer.exe isn't starting up properly from what I've just read on Google. A couple of people said this worked for them so it's worth a try.

In the Windows Registry (open 'regedit')
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\winlogon\

Set 'Shell' variable = 'Explorer.exe'

Failing that, make sure she's backed up everything she might need and try and do a system restore or maybe a clean install.

Hiya,

Yeah very weird problem lol

Messing with the reg aint a problem so i'll pop and try it

Many thanks for the reply :)

Will let you know what happens

Cheers

Hiya,

Well it worked ;)

Checked her reg and it had somert like explorer.exe then C:/windows/somert

Didn't bother noting the exact line but was like the above

Sure was a weird issue and i'm sure the fix will stay in my mind as it's the 1st time i'd heard of this problem lol

Many Thanks :) She's up n running and happy again
