how do you surf the net "halfway"?

Maybe your lights are on a seperate circuit from your plugs. And the fuse popped.

Maybe a case for unexplained mysteries!

meaning, I was reading this forum and halfway through reading it, I heard a loud pop and all my lights ain't working now. But the weird thing is, tv, pc etc are all working.

A bad time to go pop to be honest, so near christmas, doubt any electrician working right now, might give one a call tomorrow or something.

Electrician?

You prob just need to change the fuse on the electric box. Read the labels on the box (if any) try and find the one thats blown. Check the voltage and what type of fuse it is then go to some corner shop or a Co-op or something and buy the fuse and stick it in. Oh turn the mains off when you remove the fuse just incase.

Assuming it's just a blown fuse.

It was probably just the ceiling cat. While trying to cut a little window hole so it can watch you masturbate he's managed to snick a wire :p

could be ghosts tbh, our lights at our new flat used to do it, but thats what happends when you buy new builds they suck :p

If you have a fairly new house (or a new distribution unit with circuit breakers instead of fuses), then most likely the pop was a bulb blowing and the lights went out because the breaker tripped. They're pretty sensitive and a bulb blowing can be enough to do that. Go reset the breaker and see what happens. If it trips again straight away then you have a more serious fault and will need an electrician.

If you have older plug-in MCBs or traditional fuses, then they're not as sensitive. Check them anyway.

Ah crap, my fuse box is like behind tons of boxes. I will do it tomorrow and check it out.
I'd recommend you move the boxes away (when it's safe to do so - i.e. in the morning), and keep them away. It's always a good idea to have easy access to your fuse box. This is one of the reasons why. :)

If it's an old style fuse box you might have "fuse wire". If this is the case you might want to think amount getting the consumer unit replaced. Under no circumstances shove a random metallic object into the fuse box to force the connection, as was proposed by a flat mate of mine once. I'm no sparky, but something tells me this is bad. My flat mate proposed this as "it used to work" in his old car!

You would be right that replacing fuse wire that way is bad. Primarily because the 'random piece of metal' usually used is likely to be much thicker than the fuse wire was. Indeed, you'll probably end up with the house wiring being the thinnest piece of wire and in the case of a fault, that's fire raising.

I don't know if it's still an option to replace fuses with MCBs, but if it is, that might be an alternative to getting the consumer unit replaced (was for me).

I went to the box, there is 5 switch. One is the main switch which basically turns on or off the power to ** flat. The other 4 switch are 2 white and 2 red. I tried resetting all of them, but my light still wont turn on.

Take the fuse out and see if its charred. Check all the bulbs to see if any have blown... replace as necessary.
