Personally I'd say it isn't "always check who is in the audience", but if you are going to make a biting, snide or ironic witticism always have a rejoinder for the predictable rejoinder/rebuke/rebuttal...

And while it is not a good thing, loyalty to ones family/spouse doesn't necessarily correlate with being a good politician or an effective leader or manager of a country, and likewise the opposite.
