Well I fell down the custom keyboard world.

Keychron K2 HE delivered today and the Logi G Pro X I bought from Amazon a couple weeks back is getting returned. The quality difference in them isn't even comparable in terms of feel and sound, guess I still had that old idea that logitech gaming stuff is good, especially after recently getting the MX Keys for work (it's a very open office and quiet keyboards are basically a requirement!)

Logitech or most of these main hardware brands don't compare to specialist keyboard makers and Keychron isn't even the peak. It's solid but there are nicer ones but they cost substantially more.

Totally agree with you, Raymond. I must have like 15 odd keyboards, from the likes of Logitech, Razor, Corsair, Keychron, and they don't compare to the smaller brands (Some of the Keychron`s are not too bad, the Q6 max is nice to type on). My recent purchases were the K2 HE, Logi G Pro 60 X, and Air75 v3. The K2 HE is nice, the Logi is pants and the Air75 is amazing. Also awaiting delivery on a Magi 75 Pro.

The Magi60 I have feels like Marbles. Even my "cheap" numpad feels great. You know i got the switches and keycaps combination right when I handed the numpad to my 8 & 10 year old nieces to just press the buttons, they love the feel of it so much that they just had it on their lap taking turns just to press the keys for the sound and feedback of it.

Hello everyone. With my current keyboard on its way out after a decade of service, I’m looking of jumping into the custom keyboard world.

Currently eyeing up the Akko 5075b barebones (I believe that is the version that supports VIA).

Does anyone have some recommendations on switches to get or what companies to consider getting switches from? Last time I looked it was all about cherry but now it seems like things have changed. Preferably want something quiet, my current keyboard is cherry browns so the same amount of force would be good.

Have a look at gateron yellow switches, quiet and linear, possibly a little heavier than browns

I've tried Akko Rosewoods, V3 Creamy Yellows (both linear) v3 Cyan (Tactile) & Starlink (Magnetics), plus Leobog Reapers & Greywood V4 (Linear).

I really like the sound & feel of the V3 Creamy Yellows with my Weikav Stars75-S keyboard (brilliant value - check my other posts in this thread). The Reapers are also nice, but lighter to press and slightly less Thocky.

I put the Akko Starlink magnetics in my son's AttackShark X68HE Pro, which he's thrilled with - They're really quiet compared to a sprung switch, which I appreciate during his more frantic tournaments.

There's loads of really good value options if you look on AliX & Whatgeek - I've spent less than £20 a set, with the exception of the pricier Starlinks. Order a few sets to try and see what works with your keyboard...

I watched a bunch of keyboard reviews these past few months and I thought it was kind of weird when people talked about Thocky sounds and creamy sounds. I didn't think it was such a big deal.

After building mine, I get it now. It really does sound very nice. The deeper sound makes it less harsh compared to my previous keyboard. It feels very nice to type on. Almost tempted to make a smaller more portable version for work :).

My only critique is that the space bar sounds hideous and the back space it a bit clangy. Now I'm considering using mixed switches for the different keys on the keyboard. Maybe something stronger for the space bar and more tactile for keys like caps lock. Or maybe some custom keycaps.

Is this how people ended up with multiple keyboards?

Yes, this is how people end up with different and multiple keyboards because they are chasing THE one.

Spacebar is a difficult one, I have put foam in mine, but adding extra lube into the stabs helps a lot, a LOT.

I said earlier that the numpad that I made, the sound is so good that when i gave it to my 8/10 year old nieces just to "play" with, they can't stop pressing it, because the feedback and the sound it makes just make you want to keep pressing it. It is satisfying to press. It is like ASMR. They are not into keyboards, it somehow set off part of their brain to makes them want to keep pressing it. It wasn't even connected at the time (it is wireless so it was off).

Numpad you say. Hmmmm... I do need one of those. :D

What are people using for lube?

Agree with Raymond about lubing the stabs.

The space bar on my Keychron was awful and after packing the inside with a bit of blu-tak decided to put some lube on the stabs instead and it is so much better.

Just so you know. Do not use blu-tack as it stinks after a while and is very hard to remove. I did get some cheap foam inserts for the spacebar but don't need it now.
