Hi all,

You may well remember me talking about moving from my Dell 2405FPW to a LCD TV. I decided to plump for the Atec AV320W. So far, I'm very impressed, I must say.

The TV's native resolution is 1366x768 (although mine only runs at 1360?) and is certainly a HUGE fall when you consider the 2405FPW used 1920x1200. For general Windows usage, is isn't too bad. Not quite as much space, but that was a trade-off I was expecting to make.

but for gaming, it's leagues ahead. For starters, the lower resolution means my aging PC (A-64 3700+, 2GB DDR400 and a X800 Pro @ XT) doesn't need to struggle quite as much. The clarity in-game is absolutely excellent -Battlefield 2 has never been quite so much fun!

The 8ms response time has resulted in no noticeable ghosting at all. The screen is also very bright, the speakers are quite good (definitely needs a subwoofer, but are certainly quite 'bassesy') and the build quality is suprisingly remarkable, considering I'd never heard of Atec before this purchase.

I plan to wall mount this under where my projector will be.

Pros:
  1. 1366x768 native resolution - perfect for all your High Definition goodness and widescreen gaming. Not brilliant if you're a developer of any sort, but brilliant if you want smooth gaming with a lot of eye-candy.
  2. 1000:1 contrast ration - This is one hell of a bright screen, which also scales up and down quite nicely.
  3. Has a lot of inputs - DSUB, DVI, Component, Composite, Coaxial, S-Video. Pretty much anything the average home user has, will plug into this TV.
  4. Managed to get mine for just £700!

Cons:
  1. The colours aren't brilliant. However, this seems to be fixable when I actually get around to fixing it. Does anyone have any monitor calibration tools they'd recommend?
  2. Static/noise. I'm not too sure about this one, but if I strain my eyes quite hard, I can see static/noise on the screen. It's quite odd 'cause I can't see it under normal usage, only if I strain my eyes. However, I'm not sure if this could just be a duff panel causing this, as I've had a simular thing before. I used to own two 17" LG panels - and one had noise in the background, where-as the other was perfect.

That's all I can think of writing at the moment - if anyone has some questions, feel free to ask! :)

Many thanks to GordyR and others for their input in the decision making process, and making me aware of the factors I should look at!

Thanks,

Well I'd hazard a guess to say it uses the same panel as the 32" LG's - so you may well know what the quality of it is like.

Do you know of any programs to help me tweak the colours and brightness?

Ta,

The 32" is actually a few inches closer to me than the Dell was; I've got a smaller (but nicer) desk since :p

However, it doesn't really bother me. Also, I'm going to be wall mounting the TV, so it'll be moved back by a couple of inches.
