whats your experiances ? is it a better os now that its had loads of updates ?
is there a sp1 out for it yet ? or not, does it have bugs ?

cheers
I plan on running it on my ssd.

In terms of compatability, everything I ran on Windows 7 x64 runs on Window 8.1 x64. I view 8.1 as Windows 7 with most of the fat trimmed off. I definitely find W8.1 better for gaming than W7.

Not very long ago, I was dead against Windows 8.1. But once you install StartIsBack, you soon forget that you're using Windows 8.1.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 is usable. Install a start menu replacement if you don't like the UI.

Are you building a new machine or just upgrading the OS?

I would wait for Windows 9 if you're doing the latter.

Always best to grab latest Punkbuster version from their website,I think they are up to 3.7 version.

I've had no issues in gaming and oldest game I have tried is XCOM-Apocalypse(1997 game so pre Win98 lol),latest games like Risen 3,Divinity Sin no issues either.

As to Win9,nobody including me know what its going to look like etc but then I always upgrade regardless and always find it easy to adapt to any new OS with or without a Start menu mod,yes I'll be upgrading to Win9 since something new to play with but that does not take away the fact that some users will probably not like it ,its always an unknown quantity as they say,its not due until April 2015.

Win8.1 is great and I'm guessing that Win9 will be great as well so can't go wrong with either IMHO.

I like 8.1 and also like the start menu too. The start menu is just like another desktop, I really don't see what the fuss is about. Obviously, it's a personal preference issue...

I'll be getting my first copy of Windows 8.1 soon. Any pointers? Like how to turn it back to look like Windows 7 lol?

Delete all the pre-installed apps from your Start screen, replace with what you actually want there. If any software installs a shortcut to the desktop, right-click and "pin to start" then delete the desktop short cut.

I'll bear that in mind

heh thanks guys, yeah its a os upgrade not a system upgrade ;)
just want to get a feel for it i already have 8.1 pro installed on the ssd but i kept it as a backup system and boot my main os windows 7 x64 from my 1tb hdd :D

i guess i can flip over and see what its like more :)

Use it with an open mind. A lot of the start screen stuff is fairly pointless on a desktop machine, but not all. There are plenty of improvements elsewhere to make it my preferred choice.

As all things must start with 'So'.

SO.. I was an early adopter of W8 (Office 'perk' back in the day) and I originally loathed it, couldn't understand why it was needed on a desktop and the standard 'omg it's useless' comments came flying.

A few weeks into using it (I also did a W7 to W8->W8.1 on my current build) I figured out all the little tricks and tips, customisation of the home screen, searching and other stuff.

Personally? Couldn't go back to W7 now. W8/.1 is nice, smooth and faster. Since the whole "right click on start button" to bring up more options, it's also a bit easier to shut down (Who knew moving a mouse to the right hand of a monitor could be so painful?)

Also use a Surface 2 RT2 - So pretty much at home with the whole OS now anyway.

Would recommend!

Perfectly happy with 8.1 after ~2years of using 7. As other have said remove any metro apps you don't want and add your own (only ended up keeping maps/weather). Still not totally convinced on the new 'Start' menu thing but it's usable, however I rarely visit it as these days I can easily access everything from my desktop while still having it look clean.

Used to hate Win 8 upon release. Fast forward and I've left Win 7 well behind. Would never go back. Love 8.1. Boot times is ridiculously fast with a SSD and don't have to bother with Metro UI.

Can't go back to 7 now - there's plenty in 8 that's better (just that people focus on the start screen and miss all the other neat stuff).

It's ok. I have it installed on my main PC at the moment. I installed StartisBack and 8Gadgets to bring back the Start menu and Windows gadgets from Windows 7, however I have a couple of niggles with Windows 8.1 - Maybe someone can help?

1. Logging in with a Microsoft Account and still having full network access. I know I would be able to access other non-ms account PCs fine with it, but when accessing it's own shares I have no idea what the domain\username should be. I've tried this with another Windows 8 PC before and even asked the question on here.
2. How do I change Active Title Bar text colour? You can customize the colors a lot better in Windows 7, but the option in Windows 8 has seen it removed. Some can still be changed via the registry, but not all. Why did MS remove this option? Currently I have a dark theme (as that's how I like it) but I cannot read the Title Bar on Active Windows. I could on Windows 7...
3. Why when I'm watching a movie via Windows Media Player on my second monitor does it lose full screen mode whenever I click on the desktop on my other monitor? Did not happen in Windows 7 so seems odd it does in Windows 8.

I like some of the minor tweaks that Windows 8.1 brings over Windows 7, however some things just seem to have gone backwards (Not even bothering to mention Metro, oh I just did? Meh).

Not unique to 8 - 'domain' is your machines name, username is an account on that machine (when off-domain). You can turn off password protected sharing (network settings) and then set the security of the drive (or top level) folder to allow the user 'everyone' full access - after this there are no prompts from other PCs. This isn't any different from 7 (although the security on 8 is a bit tighter). Basically Windows has two levels of protection on shares - the share itself (network) and then the normal NTFS permissions.

Hope that helps!

Last time I tried this it did not authenticate (when using a Microsoft account). It works fine when using a Local account.

I might try again on a VM and see if it still works, from memory however, not.

Thanks for your help though...
