Well, I picked the GSi up...

And to whoever said it wouldn't be as big an upgrade as I thought... sorry, but you're horribly mistaken.

The 220 is a totally different car to the 214. It pulls in every gear, right upto 3/4 around the speedo (I ran out of bottle)!

Going up a steep incline after a right turn at a set of lights (setting off from standstill) the 214 used to struggle so much in 2nd gear. I tried it in the GSi, and it shocked me... it didn't just get up the hill without making a fuss, but it picked up speed probably as quick as the 214 did in 1st gear!

Then there's the on-road performance. I don't know what to say. I don't think I've stopped grinning yet! It gets to 60 effortlessly and will then keep on pulling right through to 110mph... I chickened out there. This car is horrible to drive at the speed limits as it can do so much more so easily.

Off the mark, it's great. I wasn't racing intentionally, just seeing how quickly the cars in my rear view mirror disappeared. All I'll say is, it's a very understated car. If you're in 2nd or 3rd gear in traffic sat at something like 1500rpm and put your foot down, it picks up speed brilliantly.

I was on a motorway sliproad behind a white van in the inside lane doing 25-30. I think I was in 2nd gear, moved over into the outside lane and the next time I looked at the speedo, I was doing 70mph. 3rd gear in this car is like 2nd in the 214.

I love this car! I never thought it'd be this much of an improvement. The GSi has uprated suspension as standard and you can tell that in the body roll of the car. It felt really planted and firm. I didn't feel safe pushing it too hard around bends though and the brakes don't seem as responsive as I'd hoped, but I'm sure I'll get used to the pedal.

The gearbox isn't as notchy as the one in the K, but it's still pretty nasty. It whines too, so while it makes the car sound like it has a supercharger it'll need looking at in the future.

Couple of problems so far... first, the radiator is in quite bad shape, but I knew that anyway. It isn't leaking yet, but with the beating it'll get at the MM, it's going to need replacing. Also, the keyfobs didn't seem to work very well. I drove the car home and had to really mess about trying to get it to lock. When it wouldn't unlock (if you unlock with the key the immobiliser is still activated) I crapped myself and had to unlock with the key. Cue 5 minutes of waving the fobs around trying to get it to start. Eventually it did it, but it meant I couldn't lock the car otherwise the immobiliser would arm. Got home, changed batteries in the fob and all was ok.

The other problem is that I noticed the alternator light wasn't coming on with the ignition. This gave me cause for concern as I wanted to drive the car but couldn't risk the battery going flat on me. While I was parked up showing a mate the car, the cooling fan came on, the revs dropped and went back up, so that showed that the alternator was working fine. I've started the engine about 10 times tonight, and have had no problems, so here's hoping.

Right, I think that's about it. I'll get some pictures and videos tomorrow. All in all, the GSi is a hell of an upgrade and one that is going to cost me my license :D

open the fobs up and the buttons will be loose. they want resoldering on. and be careful, they only work one way around.

Read my post, I fixed it ;) Flat batteries.

In the 2nd fob, the little (I can't for the life of me remember its name) silver thingy has broke off. It's quite common for that to happen. I'll have to send it off to get it repaired I think.

Just wait until you get the turbo version!!!! ;)

I don't want a turbo. The NASP scares me enough. Torque steer is scary!

136bhp, not sure of an accurate torque figure. Think it's around 120-135lb/ft of torque.

Definitely feels like it too :D

And yep, 2 litre 16v. Rover T-Series.

Oh, something I've found too... the 220GSi badge must attract idiots. I had 4 people tailgaiting me tonight

:D Cheers Andy! It's definitely a decent performing car. I can't begin to imagine how quick the turbo's are though.

It got quite a few looks tonight as well. Seriously, I'm so impressed at how it picks up from low revs in and 2nd gear. It doesn't half shift.

And that exhaust note... I found myself being a bit of a chav and blipping the throttle at junctions/traffic lights. Not to entice anyone into a race, but just to hear the exhaust. Drove through town (busy friday night, loads of girls around, lol) riding the clutch and blipping the throttle.

I probably looked like a **** but it sounded brilliant being reflected off all the buildings.

What date is Coombe Aaron? Will catch you on MSN to talk about those wheels :)

About the turbo badge... do people treat you differently since you put it on?

I think it's the 'GSi' bit... it sounds so much more agressive than 'SEi'.

Tis on the 22nd of April mate, already ordered my track sessions

I have to say recently I've had more and more people stuck to my arse (rear of the car ;) ) they don't stay there for too long though :D

If you don't want the wheels then I'll keep them, as I've been thinking about using them for the track, then putting them back on to the motor when I eventually sell her, but seeing as I said I'd sell them to you, you can still have them if you want. :)

Hmmm, is it an RT meet, or one from here? Might have to check out the thread.

Well, I was going to definitely get the wheels for the 214 as I didn't want to put 17's on it, but seeing as how I have the GSi now I think I'm after some 17's.

If you've got a use for them, then that's great. I just didn't want to disappoint you after telling you I'd have them for so long. I'm not saying I definitely don't want them, but if you need them then that's fine with me :)

Am I the only one who doesnt care a jot about torque steer?

Why is it such a problem for some folks?

I didn't say it was a problem, I just said I wasn't expecting it, having never experienced it before.

Cheers guys :)

The white 5 door belongs to 'rover220' off here. He came up from Stafford yesterday to have some detailing done on his car, slept here overnight with the intention of finally fitting the 50mm springs I've had in the back of the car for about a month.

Sadly, due to typical british weather, we had to call it off :(

Here's what is should look like when done...

Some of the Manc Meet regulars should recognise that spot :D

Now you can probably relate to my comments about how weedy the little 1.4 is :p

I actually drove the 214 for a short while today.

I don't know what to say... it felt like the clutch was slipping  :D

The difference between the two really is massive. Pickup from low revs in 2nd and 3rd is so impressive, even more so when it hits 2000rpm. It pulls right up to the redline.

Simon, I don't know about that. Mine seems pretty free-revving. Certainly no different from the 214 apart from the torque kicks in at 2000rpm instead of 4000rpm. The noise is the main difference. The K sounded great after 4000rpm, the T just sounds awesome ticking at idle... a really nice burble. When revved it sounds very throaty... and that's on the standard backbox.

Mike, the convoy sounds good. How easy was it to get to yours from the junction I left you at? Your car sounded ace when you put your foot down before... but I just couldn't resist going after you :D

Daz, yeah the 3 door is definitely growing on me, so is the colour. I'd have preferred nightfire red but I really like the charcoal. Even one of my mates, who constantly joked about my car being a grandad car said the 220 was very smart.

Yep, I timed mine at 10.5 seconds to 60. I don't care what people say, for the engines' power output and size of the Mk2, I was very impressed. What annoys me now, is people who have started slating the 214 whereas before I got the 220 they were impressed with the performance of it.

I remember from my SEi that at 85mph+, initiating a swift overtaking maneuver could be a bit of a hassle. Now with 136 lb-ft (vs. 91 lb-ft) at the disposal of the right foot it must be rather swift in comparison :)

I'm sure Mike (rover220) can vouch for me when I tell you that I went from 70 to 110mph... rather ******* quickly while on the motorway yesterday.

There was a punto in the outside lane, I put my foot down a bit to edge forward, he eventually moved over, so I booted it... in 5th. Jesus christ, it reminded me of when I had a ride in my boss's BMW 645. The speed it picked up was so impressive.

I had the pleasure of rocketing past a chav'd up Corsa on the way too. It must have caught their attention as I moved to the inside lane at 60mph to wait for Mike (:D) The Corsa came past and one of the chavs was pulling a weird face... so I think I got their attention, lol.

Going to have to take it easy though. I've got Pirelli P6000's on the front :(

PMKeates, you must really like Rover to mention all that about the power output and not once mention HGF. :) That's it though... the K wasn't all about HGF. If you were unlucky, you'd have it once every 90,000 miles.

Tom, it's definitely growing on me. And seeing that photoshop of it lowered is making me dribble, lol. I actually prefer the stock alloys on lowered suspension. It keeps its stealth I think. The GSi has uprated suspension as standard... it seemed to handle MUCH better than the 214 when I took it along the MM roads yesterday. Not much body roll at all!

Are you seriously saying that accelerating in the outside lane of the Motorway in a Rover 220, a 2 litre 4 cylinder, reminded you of the time your boss did the same thing in his brand new 4.4 litre V8 powered BMW?

Please, tell me you are not?

I didn't mean that it felt as quick as it... I just meant I remembered the feeling of passing cars very quickly. Similar to if I overtook a car doing 30mph.

Anyway, I think a lot of people would be very suprised at the speed my car picks up. It's not a standard gearbox and so the gearing is all close-ratio. I know for a fact that even you Fox, would comment on its acceleration.

Are you sure it's not just that the white one isn't running on top form?

I doubt it Nick. It had a HG change recently (leaking oil) and the compression is spot on. Also, when I heard Mike go for it on the motorway, I dropped to 3rd and floored it. I kept with him but didn't gain on him much/if at all.

Fox, even my dad said that the car revving at 3500rpm in 5th gear at 70 isn't right. I agree with him. 4000rpm @ 80 seems to high to me. In the 214 70 used to be at 3000rpm and 80 at 3500rpm, same as in Mike's Rover.

Also, you've got to be joking about declaring the gearbox as a mod. I'm guessing you even declared your mobile phone holder to the insurers as a mod :p

rcrossco_1, I don't know what the hell you're talking about, but a few points...

0-60 in 10 seconds was the 214. The 220 would probably do it in about 8.

The Coupe/GSi Turbo's are very quick in standard form. I really can't see how you can say that 6 seconds to 60 isn't?

Have you ever driven a T16 NASP? I'm very intrigued to find out what gearbox mine has, because it's not standard.

it's the guys first car with more than shopping trolley levels of power.
let him over-egg the pudding for now rather than character assasinate him.

While I appreciate your nice comments, I do have to add that even another 220 driver (rover220) said numerous times that my car is much quicker off the line than his.
