Looks like I’ve got the only core2duo in existence that doesn’t like to be overclocked.

Ive got a E6600 and over the past 2 months ive been trying every which way I can to overclock it i can and it looks like its hit a wall at 2.8ghz.

I was hoping for 3.2 but it absolutely will not run orthos sable lasts about 3 seconds. I’ve tried upping the Vcore all the way up to 1.5v with no difference, ive tried slackening off the ram timings to 5-5-5-18 and also setting the ram timings to auto.

So I think ive got to admit defeat and ive give up and left it at 312x9 @ 1.38125Vcore and 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1Vdimm

Some of us can't have a Core 2, and haven't got the money for a full MTB upgrade.
Just be thankful mate!
An E6600 @ 2.8 GHz would still wipe the floor with an FX62 - any more clockspeed is just for boasting rights

E6600
Gigabyte DS4 (only a couple of weeks old as the old one was RMA'ed)
Geil PC6400
Zalman Aero Flower CPU cooler
8800GTS
-------------------------------------------------------------------

312x9 - 1.38125Vcore - +0.1V MCH - +0.1V FBS - PCI-E 100MHZ - Memory timings 4-4-4-12 - 2.1Vdimm and all the usual settings diabled.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

@2.8ghz It runs about 47-48 degC on load and about 28-29 degC idle

-------------------------------------------------------------------

ive tried it at various FBS and nothing above 312x9 or 350x8 is orthos satble no matter what Vcore i give it. I had it at 356x9 earlyer which is about what i wanted to run it at. I took the Vcore all the way up to 1.5V before i give up and set it back to 312x9 @1.38Vcore

Is there a chance my PSU isn’t powerfull enough??? Does overclocking pull that much extra load??

Ive got a 500w enermax liberty and its powering the E6600, DS4, 8800GTS, 3 SATA HDD’s, DVD writer and 2 case fans

That could be likely as the recommended watt for your 8800gts is 600w, so its possible that your psu is taking quite a beating from your gpu.
imo leave your cpu at a stable speed, and don't overclock it too much as i am quite certain the reason why your having trouble overclocking your cpu is because of your gpu. if your over stress your psu then its very likely your psu will go down any sooner and possibly take your hardware along with it (inc cpu and gpu)

If you have a different-low power consumption gpu, exchange it with your 8800gts and see what happens.

I would say that is the case.

I know this is really unhelpful but some where on the net (google it) there is a online calulator that calculates how much psu powe you need.

EDIT: You need @ least a 500w psu to run a GTS, So I would definitly buy a new psu.

Have you tried anymore voltage through northbridge? cuz it sounds like chipsets problem not able to sustain high FSB.

tried it up to +0.2v. not sure how far to safely go with the MCH and FBS voltages

how far would you say would be the limmit??

That psu is fine. I ran an 8800GTX/3hds/dvdwriter/audigy2/2 case fans/oc'ed CPU fine on an Antec 480 neopower - which has combined 12v rails of something like 33 - your combined rails are much higher therefore it should be fine.
