Hello all.

Last night when I was trying to sleep I noticed the error code on my motherboard was lit up. Strange I thought, I'm sure it does not light up when shut down so I went over and had a closer look and it was reading the error 88 (Maybe 8.8. , BB or B.B.). Tired and wanting to go to bed, I just flicked the switch on the PSU. But no, that didn't solve it... It was still lit with the same error code. Slightly worried that it may become self aware, I risked turning the whole PC on.. It was angry, the graphics card fan span constantly at 100% and shook the house but nothing was displaying on the monitors. I'm sure the PC did post and loaded windows. I logged in blind to be sure and there was more activity from the HDD but enough was enough and I shut the PC down for the night. (I'm pretty sure I also cleared the CMOS as well, but wasn't overly sure how to use the button at the back of the motherboard to do it...)

This morning I repeated the same thing, but logged in through RDP and the PC was working fine, just the monitors weren't displaying anything and the GPU fan was spinning at 100%. I decided to shut down and unplug the graphics card which resulted in the error code becoming unlit. I put it back in quickly and it lit back up again. I once more unplugged it, but removed power and took it completely out for 30 or so seconds and when I put it back in the error code didn't light up again and the PC is now working perfectly.

Does anyone know what this could mean? Should Is there any testing that I should do? I'm very out of touch with PC troubleshooting. :(

Specs are:
I7 920 (stock speeds)
Gigabyte UD5
12GB RAM
ATI 6950 (new addition on launch)
3x Samsung F1 1TB
4x Samsung F4 2TB (one of these was new last Wednesday)
Corsaid HX620w
Maudio 2496 PCI Sound Card

Thanks.

A bad connection perhaps. Sounds like the 6950 wasn't happy with the power it was getting, although I must admit I wouldn't expect this to be displayed as an error while the PC was in shutdown. Just wierd is that.

I did have to remove the card to get to the SATA connections on the motherboard on Wednesday. It was working perfectly well (including 3d) until I shut it down yesterday before bed.

It not only was showing the error when shutdown, it was displaying it with literally no power going to the PC (completely unplugged).

The same thing happened again last night. This morning I went to do the same thing again and noticed the light went out instantly when unplugging the displayport cable. The monitors are new since Friday... Anyone heard of this happening before before?

maybe your not giving your system enough power or you psu is about to go out, which is causing the errors and such and the whole thing of your pc turning on, on its own .

maybe the cause, the wattage seems a tad low for an i7 system.
