I get the feeling that Arsene is pressurising the board for something. He was definately angry at the departure of Dein, and initially was going t appoint a Director of Football almost immediately.

Haven't heard anything about a Dir of Football in weeks. OK wenger's been on hols but still.

Is there a problem there?

Further after building this young team from scratch, getting anew stadirum, updating training facilities, getting Cesc to sign a 9 year deal, and lruing many players in, having a board who support HIM, fans who love him - would he not be exceptionally disloyal to walk out?

I don't think he wants to go - rather i think he wants something from the board and by dragging out his contract extension he hopes to get it. The board know the team will fall apart without.

However, i do think that its a bit ruthless and stupid of him to leave it into next season as it is unsettling players - which is not good for any team that wants to win.

I do wonder what he is up to - but hope he resolves it soon

It's been, well, not obvious exactly but certainly not disguised either that for at least a year now he has been hedging his bets and considering leaving in 2008. A couple of years back I was convinced that Paul le Guen was being groomed to take over from Wenger then.

He may have a 'job for life' at Arsenal with a free reign to do what he likes, but the bottomline is more glamour and money are available elsewhere. Perhaps the best option for him would be to engineer the sale of Fabregas to Madrid this summer and then join him in a year's time.

out of interest do arsenal fans think pat rice is capable of becoming a manager?

Probably, just not permanent Arsenal manager.

Capello, Hiddink, Mourinho and Hitzfeld are probably only guys with sufficient pedigree to take over from Wenger.

I'm not too worried. As he said in the news today, he'll honour is contract to the end, i.e. 2008. He's never walked out on a contract in his life and he says he won't do it now. No reason not to believe him.

As for why he doesn't sign an extension now, I believe when his last Arsenal contract was up he did exactly the same, in fact I believe there may have even been a period after his contract ended where he was not contracted at all (could be wrong there though). He waits until his contracts end and makes his decision then. And why not, a lot can happen in a year.

Part of me wonders if Wenger is simply waiting a year to see if the Messiah returns with a big money backer to take control of the club.

Dein can bog off to newcastle for all i care, he tried to undermine the club and the board which was unacceptable.

I guess we'll know his intentions within the next year, if he sells up to Kroenke and returns to the board as his representative then we'll know he doesn't have the best interests of Arsenal at heart, boardroom trouble is the last thing any club needs.

I'm 99% sure Wenger will stay after next year, he's got money to spend and what can any other club offer him except a bit more cash? Madrid are still an ageing team, Arsenal have much more potential, he wouldn't leave his young team behind to do it all again at Madrid.

Its all paper talk, this is nothing different to the last 3 contract extension periods that Wenger went through.

The only thing to worry about is Dein and Kroenke coming in and damaging a perfectly well run club.

apparently we are after a 16 year olf de maria or something and wenger went in person to sign him.

Doubt he'd be luring new youngsters to the club if he planned on leaving.
