I will get one of these for my mum, who will use it extensively for making curry pastes and spice mixes.

This is my favourite choice at the moment [Cuisinart Style Collection Electric Spice & Nut Grinder | Midnight Grey | SG21U ], based on a few review/comparison sites: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cuisinart-SG21U-Grinder-Stainless-Midnight/dp/B07QTTPNRP/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3UYPUQJH4706O&keywords=Cuisinart+SG21U&qid=1671130584&sprefix=cuisinart+sg21u,aps,86&sr=8-2&th=1&fbclid=IwAR2AeVoXxT2JsxzrJtoLOuOGTb6-MD2Qx7BO9apwMwzB_y_I6AMSqHgGZts

Any alternative recommendations?

Why not a decent quality granite pestle and mortar? Easier to clean for a start :) unless of course your Mum has dexterity issues then probably not suitable!

The Bengali customers when I worked retail used to swear by the Kenwood BL440 (if I remember the model correctly!).

It looks like this:
Daifort 2 in 1 Food Jug Blender with 1.6L Plastic Jar | Stainless Steel Blades, 2 Speed Control with Pulse | Smoothie Blender with Coffee/Spice Grinder Mill Included | 1.6L, 400W (Ivory White) https://amzn.eu/d/8cZ0Qx5

So it was like a blender (higher powered) with a mill attachment.

I have one of the grinders in the OP. Brilliant for making spice blends but I doubt it would make a decent paste without pre chopping or crushing everything first. I put in some garlic cloves out of laziness and it just bashed them into a few pieces and span them around.

It deals with any spices I put in though. Even whole pieces of cassia and whole cardamoms.

Good plan! We use a soup blender for the wet and a spice boy for the dry stuff.
