Do you guys experience lack of grip when braking over wet manhole covers? Or is that an indication that my tyres are crap?

Usually I tend to avoid braking over them, but in some cases it's unavoidable.

pft are you on about in a car? Cos if so thats nothing! Try it on a bike, they put them on corners and everything. Complete nightmare I tell ye.

srsly?

Its a smooth surface which is wet, even I slip over on it! :D

I am rather surprised that someone had to ask this questions!

Surely it is common sense that a smooth metal surface will be slippery when wet!

Or maybe it's something to discuss on an internet forum?
Fair do's it's pretty obvious what a wet manhole cover will result in. But I wanted to hear peoples opinions based on different tyre quality as well.

To be fair, most rubber will slip on a wet smooth surface, even my walking boots.

Wet manhole covers suck. Went backwards through a wrought iron fence because of one (not because i was a 19 yo tit in a mk2 scort with more confidence than ability).

My TC light often winks in my Scania as I pass over wet manhole covers, I really pity bikers as mentioned above.

Yeah, I notice it more on acceleration though to be honest. There's one local to me right on a corner, as well as a crest. So, just as your car starts to go light and you turn. Got to be a bit mindful of that in the rwd car.

I had a hairy moment with one once, and that was in the snow too! Some mug came to a complete stop in the road and I ended up about 1 inch from his bumper even though I left more than enough braking distance. The manhole cover just locked up one of the front wheels. It's a crazy thought you have to go through to take your foot off the brakes to unlock them in the snow. Your brain is telling you not to stop braking, but would have hit him otherwise.

Went over a manhole cover in november 1999 on my bike on a sweeping left hand bend, noticed a bike overtaking me on the bend then realised it was the back end of mine:p panic front brake front dug in spat me off (high side...very high at speed) put my hand out to break my fall snapped my right wrist clean off...only the skin holding it there  metal plates and screws later im fighting fit.:D

woah!. makes me think somebody should invent a grippy surface to apply to the top of the cover really.
