Hi

bit of advice required if anyone can spare the time, two nights ago i was installing a game and was asked to instal dx9 (thought it was already built in to vista 64 but nevermind), so i tried to download it from ms when i was told that my os was not genuine at this point i started to get nast pop ups , dreamscene closed down and aero went to basic mode. i followed the steps to activate the software (which i already had when bought in january from OC, oem vista 64 btw), so i was then told vista could not download from MS site until it was activated (which as i said it already was), from then i try to call MS but they were closed next step was to fill out an email support ticket for the problem but unfortunatly this was down also. Had an idea to use the complete system backup tool to see if this would resolve it (i had backed up vista when i first bought it). So did that and here i am two days later with everything back to normal with vista even allowing me to use the automatic update page with no issues. i wish to god i knew what triggered this problem so i could avoid this in future, the only thing i can think of and again not sure if this makes any difference was that i had installed the latest MB drivers (nforce4) from the ms update page a few hours before the problem. I thought these problems only arose with OEM when the MOBO was changed in vista, i can say for certain that no hardware had been changed and am completly baffled by this. anybody got any ideas on what triggerd it?

anyway sorry for the rambling post and any help appreciated.

bloody hell, paragraphs would make that easier to read!

read around that even bios upadates require a reactivation, not sure if thats true but maybe that applies to mobo driver changes too?

I had the exact same issue the other day when I used windows update. It said my copy was not activated when I tried to download something off the microsoft site (A download where you need to verified). It then later messed up totally with aero turning off and me getting the message every few minutes.

To fix it I found someone having the same trouble on the microsoft forums. I phoned up microsoft to activate (rather than using the internet to activate). I typed in the number they give and it worked fine. It does NOT work if you retype in your product key and activate over the internet.

But to answer your question, I haven't had the issue before and I haven't had it since, so I am at a loss as to what went wrong.

Same here but with Vista HP 32bit retail, all you need to do is click start and type slui.exe 4 into the search box and press enter, now follow the instructions to activate via the phone, restart your system when you have reactivated and all will be fine.

I do wonder what Microsoft are playing at though, i payed top price for a retail version of Vista HP 32bit from OCUK but i was still being told that the Windows validation had failed until i performed the above.

Hope this helps!

oem and retail are the same and work in the same.. its just the license (document) thats different..

I had the same problem, my copy of Vista simply stated it was not Activated (which it had been) and I had one day to do it, so I simply did it over the internet with no problems, been fine since that. :)
