Wharfedale Modus Cubes ?

Even if you spend an arm and a leg, compact systems sound terrible in comparison to even much cheaper systems using proper driver sizes.

Carefully consider your options and see if you can avoid compacts, i bought a system of Kef eggs, they sound absolutely nothing like my old "proper" system :(

It depends what you are used to and therefore is this is obviously subjective, but i would rate my Kef Eggs as "poor".

I know they are not the best small system around, and as such there may be better ones, but they were still around the £1000 mark. So if you go for compacts, i would suggest that you may need to spend considerably more than this if you are used to a good normal system at the moment.

I have two sets in my house both being driven by cheap T amps, one set is in the kitchen and the other set on my PC they are suprisingly good! obviously not as good as a full size speaker but I'm happy with them for background music while my real systems comes on for more dedicated listening.

Yeah I've gone off this idea... surprisingly there are better options using fairly compact speakers like the mission mv2 (if I can get them for 70ish) or the wharfedale diamond 9.0... I think the mv2 at that price might be a bargain ?

Both good options, I just can't like the looks of the mv2's prefer the classic lines of the diamond 9.0 also have a soft spot for the Diamond series as 7.1's were my fist real speakers!

Small speakers + subwoofer is just never going to be good.....

You are basically getting treble + bass with a bit of midrange.... pretty much no midrange / lower midrange / midbass.... Also there is bad imaging, soundstage etc...

The overall result is just a bit poor tbh.

Jamo D500

Can be had for £1299, down from RRP of £1700 - a bargain even at this price. At £1299 you are almost getting the subwoofer for free!

Mostly geared towards home cinema though. The subwoofer is very good for what it is; 12" 660Watt peak but I wanted more, so I bought Ken Kreisel DXD12012 Duo.

The speakers, however are phenomenal! They are THX Select 2 and Ultra 2 compliant. Note that you do need a decent amp to drive them, as they are rated at 150Watt RMS.

Just read the reviews!

Never really heard Jamo before...

Are they a good brand? Not very well known in the UK...

That AV package looks interesting though... Definately getting a lot of drivers for the money!

They are a Danish company, recently taken over by Klipsch. They are a high-end brand, and some of their range competes with B&W. They are not well known in the UK for some reason.

The speakers themselves are exceptionally well built, and can go very loud with very good clarity.

Whathifi gave them 5 stars, TrustedReviews 9/10, and there are a few more reviews online... just google Jamo D500. I have not seen a bad review, but all do state that they are mostly for Home Cinema use.

I almost fell off my chair when I saw the new reduced price, as I paid £1,700 for them. For the money, you really cannot go wrong!!

I wouldnt put much trust in Whathifi reviews lol...

But anyway not saying they are not good... Just that Whathifi is a terrible magazine! they do look like nice speakers and I like the layout / size of them... Shame there is nowhere to demo them in the UK..

I used to use a pair of these in a surround setup. They are OK for the cash (IE cheap!), however they were too direct as surround speakers really. I did listen to them in Stereo and they don't sound bad. They are obviously lacking in bass but they are probably pretty good for the size. I did think about using them for a bedroom system however I ended up going for some little Tangent E4 speakers which were far more pleasant to the ear and a very similar size.
