What 1u case?

Sell it and buy a 1U Opteron server. I'm sorry but build-your-own rackmounts never work as nicely as OEM boxes.

the heat from a 1u server closed in a rackmount case is emence. I built a 1u amd 64 before and the server would switch itself off.

It generates the same heat as a AMD64 would do in a 4U case or no case at all, its how you remove the heat, thats the issue. I have several 1U servers using all different cases and none of them have ever crashed in the datacenters i run them in. If your server was switching itself off, then i would guess you didnt do enough testing with it before it went it.

Ive used the cheap queenservers and chenbro servers before which can be had for (100-200£ inc powersupply), whilst im agree that there probably not the single best 1U case you can get and are probably the cheapest 1U cases your going to get, then several that i have are all excellent value for money and ive never had a problem with them.

In the end it should come down to how critical the server is to you, and you should probably pay appropriately for it.

You really shouldn't be running high-end 1U equipment in areas without air conditioning, to be honest.

That wasnt my point, the original question stated that he would like to run an FX chip in a 1U chassis which i wouldnt recommend without a good surrounding ambient temperature.

What i was trying to state though was that the average user doesnt have access to a data center or adequate cooling to support such equipment.

If you were to run a single 1U server you shouldnt have a problem, but if you were running 10 Dl360's in a rack then yes the heat produced is equivilant to a radiator and as such would need to be dispersed.
