My friend has just bought a 8800 gts but its not even hitting the 3000 mark. He has a Pentium 4 3.00Ghz but i wouldnt think it would bottleneck the card by that much. Also framerate in games isnt very impressive. Is there anything else i need to look at?

edit: specs are
Pentium 4 @ 3.00 ghz
1256 mb RAM
580w Hiper type R Powersupply
Inno 3d 8800gts @ stock speeds - 97.92 driver
Abit SG-95 mobo

on 3d mark 05

Is he running 3DMark2006?

How much RAM does he have in his system?

What drivers is he useing?

Either way, I'd expect him to be getting between 6000 and 7500, even with a Pentium 4 in his system.

Yeah i just put the latest drivers on and he has 1.2 gig of mem. So im a bit confused. I used standard procedure of driver cleaner etc. I cant think of anything else.

  1. What 3dmark version?
  2. System specs help, believe it or not.
  3. pentium 4 and 8800gtx?, ive heard of cpu limited but that puts a new perspective on the picture.
  4. driver version?
Sounds like a psu-cant-deliver-enough-power problem, so the card caps how much power it draws.

Is it a new install of windows or an old 1 ? what cards he come from and if its an old install of windows how many processes running ?

FOUND THE PROBLEM! The Cpu was idling at 88 degrees!!!!!!! Cpu fan wasnt attached properly. What should the CPU be idling at?

:D LOL

Netburst is hot, but not that hot :p

Should be idling around 30-40c.

That 3Ghz P4 is a MASSHOOOSIVE bottleneck. Its slow as slow can be. Be lucky to break about 5 - 6k with that cpu. My 3dMark06 score is linked in sig.

with my current rig i get 12044 in 3d mark 05,with a bfg 8800gts and its a lot quieter than my last card which was an xfx 7900gt extreme, which when clocked using coolbits got to about 9500 3d marks when using optimal settings

Ain't that a little slow?

I get 11968 with a x1950xt and an amd 4000+ @ 3010ghz

thats with everything at stock, just ran 3dm06 and got a score of 6136, would clocking the cpu improve score by much.

Im thinking it wont increase the mark by much, worth a try if yir carefull. It really needs cpu/mobo and memory upgrade to get the best out of it.
