Hi , i want to upgrade my current e6600 @ 3.2 CPU , ive been debating getting a new i5 set up but im not 100% on that yet, i feel the system i have is pretty good at the moment certainly not high end but not bad but i want to future proof it alittle mainly for gaming so a ATI 5xxx is already my choice of upgrade to replace my current 4850

so im pondering the CPU

heres my full specs and maybe you can help me decide my upgrade path

gigabyte 965p DS3P motherboard rev3,3
4x2gb kingston DDR2 8500 RAM
e6600
crucial 64gb M225 SSD
640gb WD HDD
650w coolermaster PSU

Cooling:

Noctua NH-U12P
Antec 900-2 case

My ideal goal is for a quad running at 4ghz, if i managed that i wouldnt upgrade my cpu/mobo/ram for 2 or 3 years, my cheapest option is to buy a socket 775 quad cpu that will hit 4ghz, the only problem with that is i dont know if my motherboard will achieve that, with my current e6600 only get upto 3.4ghz MAX , now i dont know if its the chip holding me back , the ram or the mother board

if i was to try the cheap option and go for a good clocking 775 quad which one should i be looking at ?

i5-750. It's cheap, and destroys the core 2 quad lineup. Otherwise a Core 2 Quad 9450 is good value, but your board will need to support a 500MHz FSB to make 4GHz. Once you start looking at more expensive core 2 qauds, I'd argue that the i5-750 and new motherboard makes more sense.
