What 8800GT's have the fan issues?

Im getting rid of my 7950gx2 with series 9 looming as I don't wanna loose too much on it. I want one of the cheaper 8800gt's but I read they have issues with the fan being stuck at 29%, I want to OC it. Are there fixes yet with the new drivers? is it a driver issue? I heard you can up the speed using rivatuner but only to 100%, is there no middle ground?

If this is still a prob can anyone tell me what of the cheaper 8800gt's are the new revision with the fixed fan, OCUK has quite a few around the 150-165 mark.

also which ones have the best cooler for overclocking?

Thanks

rivatuner has plenty of middle ground, i currently have a 8800gt from gigabyte and it has the fan issue but mine is set to kick in at 50% at startup and is still pretty quiet.
a lot of them ship with better coolers now so you stand a good chance o getting one of them even though there the cheaper kind, i bought an ocuk branded one for a friends build and it was the new cooler on it that was around 2 weeks ago.

The other option is to buy one with a different cooler, I've got the Gigabyte one which comes with a Zalman cooler prefitted, Leadtek have a simialr one, and several of the Gainward ones have different coolers.

Or the sparkle passive heat sink one...

Is that stuck at 29%, so when going underload it doesn't spin up, stays at 29%, as my GT is on 29% auto and has no issues at all, fan does spin up when the temp rises.

Mine never spins up, It was still at 29% and in TDU it got to 90+ then the screen just froze and went red artifacts and had to turn PC off, GPU overheated.

Don't know where you heard that from but in rivatuner you can set anywhere from 0% to 100% so that shouldn't be an issue. I just left mine on auto 29% at all time even when overclocked to 700Mhz core and it has never failed me. It's the case of good airflow I think.

And no it's not a driver issue.

*PS* WOOOOT 3000 POST!!1

Is it a hassle to use, Im looking at a rivatuner guide and you have to create all these profiles to have certain speeds etc. Is there anyway so it just increases in speed as load increases or do you have to set a speed manually that is fixed? i.e constant 80% regardless of what its doing. I don't wanna mess around having to set the fan speed everytime I plan to play a game and then when I go back to windows?

Confused, putting me off getting one.

cheers

In rivatuner's low level fan setting you can either set it to a fixed speed or choose auto which will increase fan speed when needed, although for some reason you can't determine the speed at each temp manually.

If this is a major issue for you then you can always get one with custom cooler on it. It doesn't have to be expensive something like this Gainward has very decent cooler for very minimal price.

It looks decent enough and with 80mm fan it will be a lot quieter and shift more air. Should improve OC a little, but a lot of it still depend on your luck.

so what would be *** best GT to order then as I've just cancelled my order for the BFG 8800GT OC2, cost seemed overkill when they can be had & oc'd

Done all my searching and went with asus as it seems to be the best of the cheapies on ocuk (apart from the pov one)

I see the asus, gainward & the leadtech have a different cooler um what one would be better as silence & heat can be an issue with my wavemaster case
