What ADSL router now? Loss faith in Netgear!

Howdy all,

I'm sure the "what modem/router should I get" is an age old question, but I'm really stumped at what to get now.

I'm on my 5th DG834N wireless router, and all of them have had the same issue of just stopping working every now and then resulting in a reboot (not wireless dropping, I mean the whole router will just stop working).

I recently got a DGN2000, and this has its own fault (firmware I think) where it would not read the lan ip setup I told it, so it would assign ip addresses to devices that I NEED a specific ip address assigned to, so I gave up with that.

So what am I left with? I've heard to avoid Belkin like the plague (even though I like the look of the Belkin F5D8632UK4A 300Mbps N1 Vision Wireless ADSL2+ Modem/Router), and now I've read in a few places here that the Linksys by Cisco WAG160N-UK 300Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem/Router has problems too?

I don't mind spending £150 or so on a modem/router, but ideally it's gotta work :). Also I want wireless, but I don't use wireless much tbh, mainly only for my iphone... but think its wise to go for 300mbps for future proof right?

Anyone got any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it!

Well if the linksys is the one that supports the open source software (someone back me up on that), you should probably go for it as it has everything you need and is pretty much as reliable as you want within budget. Netgear are sometimes problematic, but the fact that you've had 5 suggests maybe a different problem is causing this. I've used the Belkin and it is not bad, but I don't feel it's as good quality as it should be for that money, plus the extra expense doesn't get you much except a pointless screen tbh.

OcUK don't stock them, but the most reliable, hassle free routers i've ever used are the Draytek Vigor series, though i'm not at all sure if a wireless N model exists.

EDIT: Seems I can only see the linksys open source model for cable connections.

N standard is still in draft stage? So don't count on future proofing in that respect if any changes are made once N standard is finalised.

ZyXEL P600 range. P660 will do basic ADSL etc. I think it's the 'hw' extension for wireless. The 661 will do site to site VPN too. I generally separate wireless from other equipment and I'd go for an AP of some description.

Sounds like the famous lockup problem from the stock firmwares. 1, 2, 3 & 4 lights constantly flickering in sync? and can't access the router page? What firmware version did you use? and when did you first get the N? The stock firmwares were abysmal for this. v1_01_06 & v1_02_08

The DGTeam versions were on another field however. I don't ever recall having lockups with them. DG834NV1_V1.02.13_DGTeam_0850 was pretty good with the modified ADSL driver and now I'm back on Netgear's stock firmware, v1.02.15.

I'm fast approaching a year come late August with it.

Na the 1,2,3,4 light never flickered, the router appeared as if it was functioning as normal, nothing different, just wouldn't work.

I tried all firmwares that Netgear have, and I also tired several DGteam firmwares (new and old modem too) and they all did the same. It must be something in my setup that the DG834N didn't like.

It went today anyway, got it replaced with a DGN2000, but they didn't send me a brand new one, so I can't use it cos I have no power supply (its takes a different one if I remember correctly).

So I just decided to buy the Linksys WAG160N anyway, got it for £60 incl delivery, so not all bad... it has to perform better than my Netgear anyway!
