Have always used the default 500x500 of mp3tag in the past but have just been looking at imbedding some better quality art in my mp3's...

Is there any limitation to what itunes etc can use? What does everyone else do? :o

I use the highest resolution available. The artwork grabber built into iTunes sources 600x600 artwork from the iTunes store. However if you go to www.albumartexchange.com you will find most artwork is available at 1000x1000 minimum if not 1500x1500. Its sourced from the master rather than scanned in so the quality is spot on!

i don't know where you got that idea from? :/ i've even uploaded my own scans to the site. :p

something else to consider. running itunes cover flow full screen @ 1080p only displays the album art around 740x740px, so anything more than that is wasted. unless you like browsing images externally??? most of mine is 600x600 but it's all sourced manually so i know the quality is good. even though most itunes store stuff is the same resolution, some of it is shocking with dodgy edges cut off etc. quality > size. :)

Ah cool - looks like a pretty useful website.

Also, i'm coming across a lot of hidden metadata folders within each album that seemingly retain the older album art... can I safely delete these folders if I have tagged the art to the mp3? What applications actually use the folder based metadata?

if you're talking about hidden jpg files in the music folders, i think it's windows media player that creates those. if you've embedded high quality art in the files then you might as well delete it all. if you open the images, i think you'll find it's pretty pap quality anyway.

oh and here's a couple of screenshots i just took.

here are two album covers, both 600x600. one was acquired manually, the other is from the itunes store. guess which is which. :p

(note the right/bottom edges as well as the colour)

and here's coverflow with my smallest cover: 450x450 stretched to 740ish. it does look a bit naff to me but some might say it's fine. depends how anal you are. :D

I used to embed the max I could find before realising no software really used that much, typically I just do Google Image Search now and select medium which gives 500x500 to 600x600 covers. One think to note is that you only need to embed the artwork in the first track for iTunes. I have so many albums with MASSIVE png files embedded in every track. :(

use mp3tag to find files which have embedded art and the tracknumber isn't 1. untested but using the filter with something like this might work:

%_covers% PRESENT AND NOT %track% IS 1
