I have been try to use Handbrake to rip a few things from DVDs to my PC. I have been following a few online guides, and using the inbuilt presets. When I try to preview the content all it gives me is a poor quality blocky image most made up of artifacts(see below).

Has anyone had this problem or know of a solution?

Never seen that before. Is it just when you play them back in VLC or does it happen when you use other media players as well?

I does it in other media players as well. I have something else encoding now so I'll report back when it is done.

It has just finished encoding. It is giving just a poor audio track with no picture on both Windows Media Player or VLC.

I just used the universal preset when encoding.

Right, new update.

I have just installed Handbrake on my laptop and am getting the same issue.

Does anyone either know of a better guide to using it and solve this problem or even better know of other software that can do a better job?

DVD's are encoded to stop copying.

You need summut like DVD-Decrypt (if it's still available) or Slysoft Any-DVD(HD), which cost me £80 for a lifetime subscription (which they don't do anymore!), then you can 'rip' a disc to your media server for playback...

(hopefully I've not broken any rules telling you this!).

You don't need to pay a penny. I won't say anything else as it's against the rules to discuss it.

Would you be able to point me in the direction of somewhere that it can be said, or is that too against the rules?

There is a fabulous free program that will decrypt dvds for you, it is common enough that if you search around google for a while you will probably find someone mention it.

Slight thread hijack, but you may also find it useful if someone has the answer. I've backed up most of my dvd collection but it takes up a lot of space without using handbrake. I'm trying to keep the 5.1 and stereo channels when available but when I use the below settings I end up with 2 different stereo channels rather than stereo and 5.1. I've tried mixing in dolby surround, pro logic II and 6 channel discrete to no avail. Is there some setting I'm missing?

Edit, just used passthru setting under audio codec and works fine :)
