What am i "missing" about ipods?

As for comparison to the phone. What sort of memory does the phone have ? Could that maybe be a factor ?

Phone currently has a 2gig stick, with 1.2gig free.

Also personally I find itunes far more user friendly with regards to uploading music to the ipod than I do with nokia type applications.

Drop/drop, copy/paste. Hmm, highly complex there ;)

On a side note, I thought driving with earphones in your ear is against the law ? I could be completely wrong here mind (either way I shall don the flame coat now)

Like a handsfree kit you mean? (although i get your point about an mp3 player)

Owning an Ipod isn't about what it can do, its all about the fashion accesssory status that Ipod enjoy. The first tell-tale sign that you won't ever "get" Ipods is that you checked the specs first. The average Ipod fan just thinks about how cool they'll look when they join the Ipod-crowd. I know because this is exactly how my wife thinks. She also said to me that she'd rather that one of her kids (she's a teacher) shows her how to use an Ipod than she learns some other type of (probably better) device. As with the OP she has a Nokia phone that does everything she wants better anyway. I even do all the music transfer for her.

Ho hum, fashion for the win, I guess.

The earphones that come with ipod's are actually pretty good quality to be honest.

That is an outrageous statement!

You must have a cup and string telephone or something to think they're good. I'm guessing you've never tried anything else.

And on topic:

They look pretty, like all of apple's stuff. Form over function. The people at Apple are clever, as they know if they make it look good it will sell, regardless of how many superior alternatives there are out there. I'm a function over form kind of guy, and I would never touch apple stuff with a bargepole. The quality is rubbish (but you'll still go out and buy a new one eh), the features are lacking, the interface is irritating, you look like a knob when you use one and you probably paid an outrageous price for it with no sign of any decent customer support.

I feel the same about all their products. I've even used the desktop pcs and found them incredibly irritating coming from an ibm based machine. Well, they kind of are that now.

The bottom line is, women (and most people who know little about tech or care more about looks) find the design nice. This is why women buy minis for example, even though at their price range there's always something much better available. I think they're dreadful, but they look nice to women it seems (and maybe gay guys).

I'm impressed at how well Apple have done for themselves, but I even find their adverts irritating now. I'm not an anti-fanboy keyboard warrior ****, but I see too many people buying Apple stuff for the wrong reasons.

My Mp3 player is still going strong, a toshiba gigabeat. I have both a 20GB and 40GB version, and now they can both play pictures, videos, lossless audio, loads of games available, fully skinnable to your needs and so on. I bought the first for the same price as an ipod photo (the first colour one) back when that came out. I still get over 10hrs battery too with mp3s. Best £180 I ever spent. Unfortunately, Toshiba withdrew from Europe with the gigabeat series because of the crazy market domination of ipods here. They're still available in the US and Japan.

Not quite sure if that was a rant, but something to think about. I'm sure your wife will love her ipod.

I'm not sure it is specifically prohibited but would probably come under the general category of Rule 148 (Safe driving requires concentration) or even Rule 144 (Requiring due care and attention).

As for the original topic, iPods have never seemed that special to me beyond being quite neat and well marketed although the idea of marketing an mp3 player on the basis that you can have a randomly selecting playlist (iPod Shuffle anyone?) is prima facie evidence that the Emperors New Clothes is not merely a parable.

Zune + Zune Marketplace completely outclasses it IMO. Shame it came too late in the game, and not over here.

I can confidently say that has no bearing on why I have an iPod and I'm sure this is the case for many others.

Most ipods come with like 8gb or more, this means more music which she may want. plus as mentioned if you are using your phone playing music on it will devour the battery life.

ah the last nokia software I used was a nightmare no drag and drop. But either way with itunes you don't even have to do that

I knew donning the flame resistant coat pre-maturely was a good move ;)

YES I DID SAY THEY ARE PRETTY GOOD ! imo, I have an iphone and I use the ones that come with it because it is also a hands free with a mic attached so thats why I use it.

I have an Iphone 3g, Ipod Nano, Ipod Classic 40gb.

No other MP3 player offers better in car integration
No other mp3 player is better to use
No other mp3 players software is better
No other mp3 player looks as good
Hardly any mp3 players are better built

I've had my classic hooked up in the boot of my cars for the past 4 years + its been fantastic never missed a beat.

But then again my IRIVER sounded better, but was a pig to use so who cares.

Personally I think iPods are rubbish, sound quality on them isn't great, build quality is pretty naff, they're expensive, and iTunes is the worst software I've encountered.

I've a Sony which, in the past has had issues (sonicstage software was appauling) but now they've done away with it, my new one is the best mp3 player I've had

iPod= fashion accessory/ statement

I've used many mp3 players over the years, and none of them come close to the iPod in terms of ease of use.

But yes, bin the headphones they come with and spend some money on some decent ones, same for all these PMDs really. Shure do some very nice in-ear headphones starting at about £150, vmoda also do some awesome ones at similar prices.

My only real annoyance is the lack of FLAC support, but ALAC is a good enough alternative. iTunes isn't the best bit of software in the world, but I only use it for syncing.

I'm on an iPhone now, which has better audio quality than the iPod nano. As it's the same hardware essentially, I would expect that the iPod touch does too.

The audio quality on my Sony Walkman is very poor by comparison to both, although my Creative Zen and my friend's Zune are very similar in terms of output quality.

(I'm a bit of a gadget geek as you can tell, although I won the walkman. I also consider myself a bit of an audiophile, sound quality is very important)

I dunno, maybe people who care how their music sounds maybe?

Got given an ipod shuffle once. Gave it to someone else as a christmas present.
Got given an itunes voucher once as my bonus. No idea where that went. May have left it at the pub where we were having the food.

I don't understand the ipods popularity either.

I had an iPod touch but gave it away after getting bored of it.

I hate iTunes its very complicated and a total mess at organising things.

My new phone has better audio quality then the iPod.

Sure they are nice toys but not the best for most things.

The way Apple make the back a stupid scratchy covering to reduce resale value, and non upgradable memory is a crime.

However I can see the market for them, but its just not for me.

I only use my Ipods for plugging into the car, so the onboard amps sounds quality is irrelevant to me.

Remove the question on sound quality and features and the iPods are the best MP3 players you can get. Sounds dismissive but what they do, they do very well...

ps3ud0
