What am i "missing" about ipods?

Its all about the UI - always has been.

You dont need lots of features to listen to music, other than a slick way of listening to what you want when you want. ipod/iphone does this better than any other device.

If it helps, I dislike Apple (not because I want to conform to some anarchistic cool group, but because of some business practices i disagree with), I can't get to grips with using a Mac and i despise iTunes.. but I genuinely can't fault my iPod Touch and it's probably, excluding my DSLR, the best gadget i own.

Easy to use, looks nice, superb screen (to use AND in image quality), decent battery life, nice and light, WiFi, Apps, the lot. It's an awesome piece of kit.

And yes, it does annoy me that i can't find a fault ;)

I have an 8gig nano and a 4 gig shuffle. The nano is light enough and does the job and I got the shuffle yesterday as I do a lot of running. I am not too sure about the image as I use my own headphones and the device is hidden away anyhow.

was going to say that, I'd want an mp3 player to listen to music, why would I want to listen to it in terrible quality? :p

but swapping out the oem headphones cures this problem. And Im pretty sure most people do that with any mp3 playing gizmo. I've never stuck with the standard headphones with anything

Which 99% of the population don't, they just want a music player.

Exactly, this is why they're so popular. It's a shame since there are much better players out there imo that haven't been given a fair chance yet. I'm sure Sony could produce something awesome and cheaper if they had the same amount of sales.

I have no idea, but then, as above, we're a few of the sensible people.

Great if you don't care about sound quality or features.
Unfortunately thats partially my point - the majority of iPod users dont :(. Ive now got an iPhone as I wanted something all-in-one, but I still have my still superior iRiver H340 for road-trips and holidays etc...

ps3ud0

iRiver HP140 and B&O A8's :D

Albeit not the best interface in the world , but the sound quality and the drag and drop makes up for that

Bought a pair of Sennheiser CX55's for £45 or so and never looked back. They're lovely :)

but even then, I've found that using any ipod, vs.Sansa Vs. Sony with identical earphones, I've found ipods to be terrible

I have an ipod and found it to be the best MP3 player about when I was looking. Unless you're a complete audio nerd then the audio quality is damn good, the UI is slick and easy to use, the battery is excellent and it looks good. What else do you need in a portable music player?

Again it's back to iTunes, Sony did have a fairly good set of players out there but they didn't put enough effort and continuous support into their own software which caused the failure. Apple are really committed to iTunes and the surrounding infrastructure, it's going to take another company with the same sort of attitude to even get close to the iPod's success.

got a touch two months ago and love it it's great fun sold the PSP soon as i got it.

Bought loads via itunes as well (well because it's the only way to buy MP3's in belgium atm :( )

Totally disagree - the iPod as a source compared to other brands (iRiver, Cowon and Sony to name a few) just arent in the same league regards sound quality and replacing the earphones will usually just maintain that distance rather than substantially reduce it...

Tried a few, didn't get on with them.

I can see why they appeal -

- iTunes doing everything for you
- "simple" interface
- Look good

However, I don't get on with the click wheel at all after using D-pads and folder navigation for years, I prefer Mediamonkey to iTunes (so I'm not tied down) and I care about sound quality and features. So it's not for me.

Got a Sansa Clip 8gb for excercise/walking (the PERFECT budget player - sounds great too) and a Cowon D2 (with Rockbox) for everything else. I can deal with the occasional "Well why didn't you get an iPod?" :)

I'd say that the only people that notice differences in the quality of iPods sound are audiophiles. To be honest, an iPod is an ideal present for the wife. They look nice, they feel nice to use and they'll sound nice to her as well. Who cares if it's not as good as some other MP3 player in regards to sound quality that his wife probably won't even recognise? They are hardly tinny or distorted.

I'm sure your wife will love it. :)

Zune + Zune Marketplace completely outclasses it IMO. Shame it came too late in the game, and not over here.

Zune software is rubbish and the actual Zune is hard to use. (From A Zune 120 user).

The DAC inside the Zune is very good though. Everything else ignored I do love the sound quality when hooked up to my Audio Technica ESW9 headphones.
