Im using an X2 4200+ dual and it says im running at 2.2ghz

now is this overall 2.2ghz or is that 2.2ghz for each chip?

not really, as not all games/software utilises both cores 100%.

Also theres the diminishing returns.

2xcores does not mean 2x performance.

efficiency means you lose some performance in sorting out what core does what.
