I have a socket 939 motherboard i am going to use to make file server/ web server out of. It will be going inside a 1U case.

What should i go for:

- AMD Opteron 146 2.0 Ghz

- AMD 64 3700+

Or is there not much difference?

From what I've read about them (& the high regard for them too) I'd use the opteron. (& this is from a former 3700+ owner - AFAIK the stock speed was 2.2ghz)

Unless you can get them very cheap, I would seriously consider forgetting it and going for a more recent chipset. 939 CPUs and DDR are stupidly expensive for what you get.

An opty 146 wills et you back approx £20, RAM is quite expensiv if you're wanting good stuff.

The 146 I had did me a good few years before needing upgraded, very nice workhorse cpu.
