hi, looking at maybe getting a new monitor, and the 2 i have found are :
Samsung SM2233RZ 22" DVI-D 3D Gaming Monitor
and
LG W2363D-PF - LCD display - TFT - 23" 3D Ready Monitor

the thing is, what does '3D Ready' mean? that is 120Hz so with some extra equiptment (the Nvidia 3D stuff) it will be 3D? if so, why do these differ to any other 120Hz monitor, or is there something special about these?

yes they can produce 3D with the Nvidia glasses kit.
They should not differ from other 120hz monitors but you need to make sure the monitor can accept and display 120hz signals.

why have most places stopped listing the refresh rates in their specs? is it because they have placed all their 120Hz in their '3D Ready' sections so everything else you can assume is 60Hz?

Yes all the 120hz capable monitors are placed in the 3D Monitors section on overclockers they are anyway:p

The lg would be my choice between those 2 monitors i would have one if i didnt already have a acer 120hz monitor which im more than happy with.:)

i currently have an LG monitor, and i love it, but i get really bad screen tearing, so vsync is on all the time. so wondered if upgrading to 120Hz would not only give me the option of going 3D at some point, but also give me better FPS.

Well i play all my games with v sync off on my 120Hz acer and i have seen very little screen tearing tbh if any.

You will benefit from higher frames and little to no screen tearing.:)
