What are IPOD Classic's like ?

other players are better in different area's. its why i use my sony player and not my iphone for music, the sony's headphone output is in a different league to my iphone.

the whole 'there's a reason.....' statement amuses me.

to be honest, if it was easier to use a different MP3 player with Macs, I probably wouldn't have an ipod. It seems really stupid to me to have all that space and not be able to play FLACs

the iphone was limited in lots of ways and the headphone socket is one of the silliest decisions they made on that. Baffles me why they recessed it, I bought an adapter off ebay and its bust already so I use my ipod for music and my iphone for calls :)

Why does the statement amuse you anyway? If you listen to some people you'd think the ipod was made from the devils poo but its perfectly servicable and very nice to use, yes its missing some features but my point was its popular for more reasons than it being "cool" which it patently isn't, at least not anymore.

i was referring to the sound quality of the headphone output, not the build. i have an adaptor for my iphone too:)

because for the longest time thats all it was ever about. something chick and modern that was the 'must have gadget'. all they've ever had going for them was the interface and in later models the build quality (the iphone/itouch really are very well put together). its both quicker and easier to put exactly what music i want on my sony, the battery lasts longer, and the sound quality is far better. of course, compared to a classic the storage on my sony is minute. but give the choice of an 80gb classic or an 80gb sony...........;)

the reason ipods are so popular is because apple marketed them brilliantly, not much else. and they are still very 'cool'. my iphone still impresses people but honestly i dont care. its about the sound for me lol

I guess some of it comes down to how you handle your music too, I really like itunes but I've never used anything else but I've never felt the need to use anything else.. bit of a self fulfilling prophecy i guess :)

There may well be unneccessary hoops I am jumping through to use itunes but I've been using it so long I really don't mind :)

I quite like the simplicity of iTunes.

All my music is ripped in Apple Lossless, and the whole importing process is done with a single-click, which says it all really.

I am anal retentive about album art, but on the rare occassion that iTunes has failed me I just pop the name in Google, or a decent cover site and add the info myself.

Same with the iPod in my eyes. It plays my music at a good level of clarity, with enough capacity to keep all my music and some tv shows, and its set up to sync when I connect it to my Mac. Really can't complain :)

I consider myself a big audiophile, and while I wouldn't call the iPod the be-all and end-all, it's a portable music player; unless you have some expensive headphones, you aren't going to notice the limitations. That's what my Hi-Fi is for.. serious listening :D

I have a 160gb classic and it's great. Sound quality is good as long as you rip at a decent bitrate. I try not to go below 192 Kbps just because I listen quite loud and I can hear the difference. Plus I have 160GB to fill!

iTunes sucks on Windows but it's great in OSX.

Kinda OT but I've always loved iTunes on Windows, even though a few releases have been slow and v.buggy (iTunes V7 release, grr!) I'm intrigued as to why it is so much better on OS X? I assume it's because it's not a bad port so it's a bit more stable and faster? I'm getting my first Mac next Thursday so I'm looking forward to using iTunes in its native format.

I feel like an itunes rep lol but in what way is winamp better?

I've never used it and like I said I am perfectly happy with itunes, it always just works and works fine. Its never crashed apart from when I've had a massively overcooked clock and it just does exactly what i need with the absolute minimum of fuss?

One thing with the classic is that i can change tracks, volume without getting it out of my pocket. Can't do that with the itouch (unless you jailbreak and install an app but that means leaving the screen on...). I can do it with the iphone but only if i use the supplied headphones.
if you doubletap the home button it brings up a nice shortcut menu that you could learn without too much trouble.

Please could you expand on that? i.e. the double tap of the home button etc to change tracks etc in your pocket without leaving the screen on? (I don't have an iPod touch)

Basically, is the Touch usable for changing tracks etc without taking it out of your pocket? (the new Touch has dedicated volume buttons so that's volume sorted I guess)

Yes, double tap the home button, even when locked and the controls come up on screen at the top, under the time.

I have the 80gb black classic, I don't know if it's just me but I have around 25gb of music on it and the click wheel is pretty unresponsive at times, it's getting to the point where I just end up clicking the wheel rather than changing the volume or fast forwarding the track, has anyone else experienced this?

I have the 80GB one too in black and it's great. Running out of space, though! My only gripe is the clickwheel. It's a bit smaller than previous iPods (or my fingers are getting fatter as I approach 23), and I find scrolling isn't as smooth as a result, unless I use my finger tip.

no, you can't. The track change is via the headphone mic button, the alternative is install an app that is use even when the touch is locked but i worry that uses more juice as its another app running and the screen technically is not off, but just on low brightness.

What you need is get is something like the imat for it like this one for the iphone i got. Adds no bulk, but adds grip and protects it from scratches.

I love the idea of that case, they even make them for the touch (although not in black, unfortunately). Can't find anywhere that sells them though!
