I'm going to be without a gpu for a few weeks, just curious as to what my gaming options are, have my 2600k's onboard hd3000 @1920x1080 or my macbooks 320m @1280x800 to choose from.

Am I aiming too high to hope for reasonable frame rates in source games i.e. half life 2?

Some suggestions on playable games on either platform welcome :)

Play a Thief game :) they're on sale at the moment on steam.
man thats soooooo tempting. i liked thief deadly shadows so much that i bought it again for my current PC.

do you think i will be able to tolerate the graphics of thief 1 and 2 if i'm ok with deadly shadows?

Remember System Shock 2? That's what they look like. :D

i've never even heard of system shock 2, let alone seen what it looks like.

i've just had an absolutely revolutionary idea* though.... i'll look for gameplay videos on youtube and see what it looks like.

might just buy the pack of all of them since its an extra £2 to get rid of DVD noises on deadly shadows and possibly some performance issues i have with it @Max settings (FPS is fine, but i get random stuff like hanging on the book page turning animation and repeating the page turn sound 6 or 7 times before it actually turns the page)

*may be the most obvious idea ever

*edit*
just realised how stupid i've been. i'm worrying about graphics yet the game i've played most this month is minecraft

well, i'm £10 poorer and three steam games richer

also, steam is running like a boss. took 2 minutes to download thief 2 and its going about the same for thief 3 (6MB/s+)

There is a site somewhere I believe that compares frame rates at various settings on a wide variety of games against loads of gpu's and the HD3000 is on there. I will have a look see if I can find it...

I think this is the link

Thanks everyone, lots of info here, think I'll save cooking my macbook by trying to run games on it (cpu hits 80c+ just browsing youtube) and stick with the HD3000.

Never played any of the Thief games so that could be a good place to start along side some of the older source titles.
