What are my options

Hi,

After a bit of advice re our laptop at home, we have an Acer Aspire 3690 1.6ghz with 512 RAM and it's useless, sometimes it works OK other times it won't even scroll up a web page for 5 minutes and the battery is kaput

Options I see upgrade this RAM by another battery and a new W7 operating system

However

The cost fr all this I could add a small amount and get something better, what's around for £200? second hand isn't a problem, would like HDMI out and a dvd / blueray player.

Use is just general surfing, no gaming and excel word etc

512Mb is not enough for modern versions of windows.

I would stick in 2GB of RAM, test the laptop with a new build of windows (e.g. the Windows 8 preview that you can legitimately test for free till next year).

If all good.. . buy a battery. If not, sell the RAM and look for something different.

( S/H laptop wiht Blu ray playback for less than £200 seems unlikely to me )

What i would do,

Put 2GB RAM in it.

Put a Core 2 T5300 in it.

Do a fresh reinstall.

See what its like.

Thanks chaps, 2gb RAM and W8 super fast and stable, only thing being the 1.7 chip didn't work so I'll have to send it back.

It's like a different machine
