Behind you... Naked!
Good budget for basic gaming or a waste of time.

The thing is, that I am tryign to get a couple of old 6600GTs to SLI and Im failing and so I fancy playing with a couple of cheap and nasty cards just to get SLI ( IM GETTING DEJA VU HERE ) playing.

So, what are these cards like?

Can you compare them to say a 6600GT or 6800GT or what?

Basically are they worth it if I paid out £60 for a pair?

No reason why SLI shouldnt work with 6600GT cards & if they arent working for you why bother with SLI in that low end graphics card range. Better to just buy a single card like the 7600GT or better yet X1650XT for £58.74.

If you can stretch to £76.36 you can get the OcUK X1950 pro which will be much better than anything else.

LOL

Its not that I need a fast system really...

Its not my main PC, I just want a PC that will SLI.

I have simply been unable to get the 6600GTs to thats all, so I thought of a cheap and nasty pair that are more up to date??? Perhaps give them a better chance of success???

---

Several months ago, when I had issues, I simply failed to get them to SLI, I asked here and was told to try driver version XXX, I did, and it worked and the PC was finally able to SLI!!!!

Now, a couple of days later, I had an update and that put paid to this PC's SLI days...
A while after this, in my quest to get them to SLI again, I had a look at the firmware on the cards and they were different, so, I decided that I would copy the firmware of the latter card to the older card, but it failed and for several months, I assumed the card was gone and was dead.

Now, I got hold of gigabyte and explain my situation and they helped me brilliantly, the Card was eventually recovered using firmware F2 and so I upped the other card too, so they both have the very same Firmware now, but now, if the drivers are too old, the card wont install ( Obviously ) but if the drivers are too new, it either BSODs or I get a blank screen... This also hangs the PC cos when it restarts after this, It re-finds the cards and blanks and hangs again.

Only found one driver that runs one of the cards ( v94.24 ) but the other card wont start?

Thats basically about it really.

Dont bother. the 8400GS are great for HTPC, and are also ok for the occasional game (they are about as quick as a 7300GT in some benchmarks) But for £60 you could get something much quicker.

Hmm 5000 3dmark05 with a easy volt mod... not too shabby for a £30inc card. http://sg.vr-zone.com/print.php?i=5133

i do love seeing those volt mods on lower cards. even though what i have now could easily outperform them in sli, im tempted to try it lol

LOL

I was just about to say that my old MX440 Cards could get 8000 but then I saw you said 3DM5K.... I was thinking of 2K LOL

5000 isnt bad though... What can I expect at stock and in SLI on them?

What would you suggest then, as a dirt cheap SLI option.

I mean, cheap as in, dirt cheap, but yet not cheap to be just wasting money.

What pair of cards would be worth bothering with?

And of course, that would be an equivalent as a single... What?

I got 4 x 6600GT cards you see, and its fun, and to say its useless is silly... Its more than fast enough for all my games... Sure its not massively future proof, but it plays Doom3 / Quake 4 with all the boomf just fine a 1024x768 which lets be honest, is perfectly fine for 99% of us.

8500GT would be better... if they are all anything like the OCuk one I played with they overclock like mad... I can only imagine what they'd do with a volt mod...

Ah, ok, so this thing here

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-127-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=912

Wont be too bad no?

Ok, its £63 so thats fine, but I want to SLI them... Thats closer to £130

Hmm... Ok, and for £130 I can get

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-046-BG&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=912

Ok, a few quid difference I know, but would the 2 cards at £63 each be comparable with the one card at £138?

I want a reason to explain to the missus why I got 3 SLI Boards now and only 2 are actually doing any SLI... Plus my 6600GT setups are all done with second hand cards, this will be the one and only SLI setup I have built with new bits.

Cheers.

get the x1950pro for 70 squids. seriously. sli is only for when the fastest card is not fast enough. sli 8800gtx - fair enough, but what's the point when you can get a cheap single card that is faster.....

Other then the "i've got an sli system", you will be better off getting a higher spec single card system.

What is that makes you want an SLI system, what do you hope to get from running SLI.

I believe He already has two 6600gt sli systems that refuse to work and a powerful main rig as his sig suggests so this is just a muck around sli system.

SLI is pointless with anything other than top end cards. As you can always get a single card that will beat 2 budget/midrange cards for the same price or cheaper.

For example there are no £35 cards x 2 that will be as fast as a £70 X1950Pro.

Just because you have an SLI motherboard, doesnt mean you need to run SLI, and to call it `fun`, well I dont see what fun it is when you spend more money on less performance.

As for getting 2x8500GTs, yes they may be as good as one £130 8600GTS, but then 8600GTS is crappy for the money and will be beat by the above mentioned £70 X1950Pro.

exactly the point i was trying to make but you've explained it more clearly.
