What are the current DSL connection providers?

What I am saying is, with ADSL you need a phone line to connect where as DSL you don't need a phone line

Erm, ADSL is a form of DSL, as is SDSL, VDSL etc. All DSL types require a phone line.

Virgin have two offerings - cable and ADSL and the cable network is nothing to do with DSL in any way, shape or form.

Don't get so hung up on terminolgy.

PSTN [size=-1]public switched telephone network <--this is modified to give adsl

As above with what Phemo said.

DSL digital subscriber Line <-- basically means broadband

ADSL asymetric digital subscriber line <-- a specific type of broadband slow upload fast download

ISDN [size=-1]integrated Services Digital Network <-- the only thing remotely close in my eyes to what your talking about but this aint broadband <quite slow even when paired> and can be used to make calls.

Hope i didn't make it more confusing for you.

The reason I ask this is, with Virgin you can call them up and they can just connect the Cable for there modem without the need of actually having a phone line as the cable is the connection.

As I don't wan't to pay additional money for the phone line.

Everyone that has ADSL has to pay an annual BT phone line subscription :(

No getting around it.. unless you go cable.

Thats what I mean, I refuse to do business with Virgin so I guess I have no choice but lose to them and get Cable with Virgin.

i guess you ignored my post.

AOL does cable

How do they provide cable? surely they would have to use the existing virgin/telewest cable network. Cant say ive ever heard that AOL did cable, is it something new?

edit: bit of a search on the web and yes its through the virgin cable system. So no use to the OP as he cant get cable it seems anyway :p

Seems your only choice is ADSL then... good luck!

Or you go with a MPF LLU provider like Bulldog.

You don't pay BT anything with MPF LLU as your provider takes control of both your voice and data services.
