Don't tend to play many games but fancy getting myself a flight sim.
Is Microsoft Flight Sim X still the best to go for or are there newer and better alternatives out now?
I think there are quite a few mods though for the MS one?

Andrew

Yes fsx is the best civil sim out there.

Theres also take on helicopters which is a helicopter civil sim.

For combat, try:

IL2 1946 (ageing ww2 sim)
IL2 Cliffs of Dover (new ww2 sim)
Rise of Flight (ww1)
Lock On Flaming Cliffs 2 (modern jets)
DCS Black Shark 2 (sim about the black shark helicopter)
DCS A10 Warthog (sim about the a10c warthog plane)
Wings of Prey (ww2 sim that can be played as a sim but also has an arcade mode)

I'm sure someone will be along to reccomend you some fsx mods, but there are a few that I like to use.

Traffic X - This adds lots of AI planes to the game, basically breathes life into the game and is something I would never play without now.

Ground Environment Europe - This adds reworked ground textures to all of Europe, personally I find it a bit of a chocolate teapot when flying passenger jets as you tend to fly too high to see the textures. For small planes it is excellent.

Other people will tell you to get REX which makes water look amazing and adds a new look to clouds. But I found this too much of a toll on my system!

If you say which aircraft you'd like to pilot I can perhaps reccomend some individual aircraft addons, I have a couple :)

For shear volume of addons, both freeware & payware, plus a thriving FS community, then FSX would be your best bet. But don't expect it to be perfect.

There is the new MS Flight coming out sometime next year but TBH, I got a feeling it will be pay-per-plane type of sim, as it will be using windows live my guess will be that MS will keep strict tabs on 3rd party free/payware. Plus, unless it is near 100% compatible with current FSX addons (highly unlikely), it will be a fairly barren & plain in its vanilla version, just as FSX vanilla is.

PS, Worth checking out the official FSX thread if you want to find out more, just skip past the screen shot posts and there should be tons of info & links that are helpful and useful.

You can't go wrong with captain sim addons as far as civil jets goes.

They might not be the prettiest looking but the "feel" is just supreme.
