What are the expected load temps on a phenom X4 with Baram?

I am just testing out my new Baram cooler (with one 120mm apache fan) and am kind of disappointed. I had expected a massive temp reduction from my hyper tx3 and to be honest it does not seem all that different.

I am getting a TIMPIN0 of 55 under load.

I am testing this on a phenom x2 555 unlocked to quad and overclocked to 3.8GHz, htlink: 2665, nb frequency: 2665.

What do people think? Does this seem like a good max temp? Maybe I have applied it wrong?

Or perhaps more likely I got all caught up in how sexy it looks and had unrealistic expectations :p.

My hyper tx3 gave me TIMPIN0 of around 62 for the same set up so I guess this is a significant improvement. I had just hoped that the Baram would just laugh at the phenom and sit at around 40 or something.

I get to about 56° - 60° load with my stock cooler at stock settings, so like you said you may of expected better, what TIM are you using?, how much?, and what's the airflow like? and do you get warm or cool air coming from the rear of the case?, which way did you sit the Baram, North/South or East/West? maybe the other way will produce a better flow!

I am using Arctic Alumina which supposedly is almost as good as arctic silver. Perhaps I should have stuck with the stuff that came with it... Maybe I put too much on... But I put less than a pea sized amount so I dont think it can be way too much even if it is a bit too much.

I have a 120mm fan at the bottom front intaking and one at the middle back exhausting. I would say air flow ought to be pretty good. My cable management is not stunning but it is reasonable. Also the temps do not seem to drop when I take the side off.

The baram is blowing air towards the exhaust fan.

Maybe I should get an extra fan for it? Or maybe try refitting with some better TIM?

imo 55 under load is still quite good condiering it used to be a dualc ore at 3.0ghz. You still have headroom to move up to 4.0 temperature wise as well as i'd say 62 is the limit

What are you classing as load? I get temps a few degrees hotter in S&M than in Prime95 for example.

I'm running an unlocked Athlon X2 5000+ @ 3.3GHz Phenom FX-5000 (basically a 940 Deneb core). Using a Scythe Kama angle (which is supposed to perform similarly to a baram - maybe a couple of degrees warmer) I get high 40s or low 50s in Prime95 blend. I get an absolute max of 54°C in S&M MMX/SSE test.

Had to really work on case airflow to get temps down that low. With poor case arflow I would expect another 5-10°C on top of that.

I am classing prime95 blend as load. I am pretty sure the case air flow as not the problem as taking the side off did not help and neither did adding a 92mm side intake fan.

What fan(s) do you use on your Kama angle? Does having a 'pull' as well as a 'push' help a lot?

eddy, i have noticed after testing a 955 to a 550be unlocked that the unlocked proccy produces more heat than a stock quad core cpu even clocked at the same Mhz (only around 3-5c)

I have a mugen 2 with a 550 unlocked at 3.8Ghz with a 2800NB and hit around 55, a corsair h50 couldnt not help the temps and the vcore is only at 1.425 on my board with mx-3.

I can hit 4-4.1 @ 1.55 vcore however i need to have the back doors open to run it under any load as the temps climb fast, only way to hit that speed 24/7 would be proper water cooling.

You guys have reassured me. I like my Baram again! :)

I think I will work on getting 3.8 stable for daily use and leave it at that. Thanks all. :D

Also lemzip: what nb voltage did you go to to get 2800? I am on 2600 and even quite large increases in nb voltage (up to 1.35) dont seem to make any difference.

Might this be because unlockers always talk about their TIMPIN temp where as people who buy quads are talking about their core temps? I have found that the TIMPIN is generally 5-7C more than the core temps (at least in locked mode).

i did have the voltage on auto but have set to 1.35v and that ran through 7 hours prime with no fails.

Also no, i think the unlocking process does something as on 1.425v and amb @22c and struggle to keep it around 55ish, the h50 couldnt even do that at all and i was getting thermal throttling on the chip, a 965 (dened c2) has no problems and is cooler (running same speed so both denebs @ 3.8Ghz.

Interesting. Thats good to know that I am not the only one getting high temps.

2800 NB on 1.35v is doing pretty good! :D I could not even boot with the nb above 2600 on that v.

I have ordered some Arctic silver 5 to replace the arctic alumina. Hopefully that should drop a few degrees off.

Also I found out that alumina is actually an adhesive as well (not made clear when I bought it) so if I allow the bond to form it will glue my cooler to the sink. Not so great!

Really pleased with my Arctic silver 5. Now getting load temps of 49. Amazing how much difference the TIM can make.
