What are the general thoughts around crossplay?

I love it for PvE games - but I don't think it has any place in competitive PvP games (be that FPS games, racing games etc.)

You just open up every platform to complain (PC complaining about aim assist, console complaining about mouse/keyboard, both platforms thinking everyone cheats with a Cronus or ESP on PC).

It's been around 6+ years now that it's been a thing ever since Fortnite implemented it and it took off from there. I play with some friends who have no idea it's even a thing and others that refuse to play with crossplay on because of dealing with people cheating on PC / dealing with console aim assist.

Ultimately depends on the player base numbers. If competitive had trackable ranks with stats on hardware then it would be more forgiving, or the option to opt out of matchups, eg, crossplay, country, age, etc.

If players really wanted the challenge they'd embrace the differences, but reality is many people just want first place regardless of opposing views or any advantages they have over their opponent.

Pros and cons:

Pros it increases the longevity of some PC games that would fundamentally struggle.

Cons it depends on how the game handles aim assist, sometimes it can be brutal as its so powerful on console, other times feels fine and then can also feel under done so PC players dominate.

Overall i say its more a positive than negative.

Some games do it well, Fortnite for instance. But in others like Warzone it seems heavily in favour of controller players.
Yeah totally agree that some games do it better than others. Fortnite is weird in that it groups everyone into a big pool, I got killed by someone on Switch the other week...

I like how Apex and OW2 do it, console is default crossplay then if anyone parties with a PC player then it opens up the wider player pool. It means I can play with my console friends when we want but they can also play as just their group if they want to avoid PC players. Also means if I play with a mate of mine on PC who regularly whines about aim assist, we can avoid that convo entirely.

depends on the game type as well.
something like "among us" / factorio / Artemis spaceship bridge simulator / walkabout mini golf / OpenTTD / unrailed
would work well and really brings people togeather.

twich/fps not so much its were you get the devide. RTS may or may not work well in cross play.

edit : fts = rts

pvp fps NO
pve FPS yep it can work

As above..... casual gaming its awesome. So many games I can play with my Son or my nephew's who live abroad via their PS/Switch

I can see how it might really cause issues for any serious competitive play for all the reasons given. Its hard to see how you solve balancing controller vs KBM.
