What are the laws on items left on our property?

Hi,

Basically an online shop has left an item here, we have told Citylink (no the company isn't Overclockers :p) and they said the online shop people will come and pick it up.

If these people don't come pick up their item where do I stand? Is it like squatting where if it's here for a certain amount of time it legally becomes mine?

Can anyone link me to some legal sites explaining this please?

Thanks,
Craig.

Unsolicited Goods has all you need to know.

Unsolicited goods only applies if he never ordered it or contacted the company in such a way they think he could have ordered it.

If he ordered it and changed his mind, the unsolicited goods idea does NOT apply.

Phone them up ASAP, and tell them the item is here and you are charging them £10/day for storage.

If they don't pick it up after 3-4 weeks, just eBay. :)

We need more information. They quite obviously have not simply left it on your property, have they. They must have delivered it via courier to your property and this is the important bit - why? Did you order anything from them?

Basically Citylink lost the item, the online shop sent the item again.

The lost item then arrived at our house about a week later. We have notified Citylink that we have it.

while it is not your property, the onus is on them to arrange collection and to collect it etc. if you've informed them via citylink there's nothing else you need do, although i wouldnt open it and start playing with it just yet

You therefore have absolutely zero right to retain it.

I'm not, it's just sitting there waiting for someone to come pick it up, I'm not going to refuse to give it to them if they do come pick it up.

Surely, like squatting, there's some law that if I have it long enough then it's mine? (With squatting you can stay there for something like 12 years and the house/building becomes yours).

So you now have two of the same item but only paid for one?

Have you informed the shop to arrange collection of the 'lost' item?

Yup

I have told Citylink, they said all I need to do is wait for the shop to come pick it up. So I guess they'll inform them.
