I was thinking on the drive into the office this morning about the mentality of some drivers on the road. What must go through someone's head as they blast past you on a dual carriage way, way in excess of the speed limit? I get the impression a lot of drivers feel like they are better than the cars/drivers they over take? I'm talking about the drivers who make a big thing of showing you their car is faster than yours - what are they trying to prove? It goes hand in hand with the drivers who sit 2 inches from your bumper, I suppose.
What are they thinking?

Depends on the situation.
I certainly don't tailgate, but I do drive quickly on the roads where it's reasonable safe to do so.

Personally I couldn't care less about the slowsters dawdling around when I blast past them. I only get upset when they show their typical ignorance by staying in the outside lane, oblivious to the queue of cars behind waiting to get past. I get the impression that because they don't want to, or are incapable of going faster that they should make sure no else can either.
I would tend to agree with you if they were revving up at the lights or something, but simply getting to a destination faster isn't mental really? They might get kicks out of going fast? You can't really generalise by saying people who overtake are trying to show up your car.....for example I might be cruising on the motorway and a little Ford KA might zoom past, hardly makes me jealous, nor makes me want to race him!
Just don't go in the fast lane if you don't want people sitting up your rear bumper, or maybe do the speed limit?
This annoys me. I will come off a roundabout in the fast lane and the road is clear for the car infront to move over....but no, they stay in the outside lane doing 50mph/70mph so that I can't undertake or overtake. /rant.

On a more serious note though, there is a significant difference between idiots and people who want the adrenaline rush. Idiots will take uncalculated risks at the peril of themselves and drivers around them. Adrenaline junkies (I used to be one) on the other hand will consider the lives of others before taking risks.

Agreed. I know I like a spirited drive, but by no means do I drive like the guy I saw yesterday. He hammered it passed me at about 100mph in his company BMW 118D, then approached some lights and was in the slow lane. When we got to dual carriageway again he pulled in the fast lane behind me, I was stuck behind a driver in the fast lane so he undertook us all then sat on a transit vans bumper swerving left and right till he moved out the way.
He probably got home about 5 mins quicker by doing this, but it was dangerous and he was an idiot.
I used to believe that but now I genuinely think people who do this just don't see it. No malice or intention, just completely oblivious, listening to Rihanna on the radio and thinking about the day ahead. The reason for this was my girlfriend once done it and I told her to pull over to the left and she said, "oh yeah!". Dippy cow.

I know it gets said all the time, but my wifes commute to work is plagued by 45mphers who are the same. It doesn't matter if they are in an NSL or a 30 zone they continue at 45mph regardless.

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about people driving slow who diserve to be overtaken. I'm refering to those situations where it doesn't make much sense. For example, your doing NSL in the inside lane of a dual carriage way, the car behind you is following at the same speed, then all of a sudden they change lane and blast past you, then move back over and carry on at NSL. Another example would be when the car comes along side you and maintains speed, then blasts off as if racing you. Just irks me abit.

I hate people that drive 30 along the Portman Road in Reading. It's a 40 mile an hour zone, and apparently they can't see the 40mph speed limit signs that are on the lamp posts every 100 meters. Also, these people also slow down from 30 when they go past the speed camera on the same road. ARGH.
I overtook someone doing the above once, obviously making sure it was safe to do so, and I was flashed at / beeped at. It should have been THEM getting the beeping!

It really annoys me when the BMW and Merc drivers (rarely other cars), blast around breaking the speed limit in 30's and 40's, then when approaching a set of traffic lights, they will undertake as fast as they can then cut across back into the fast lane and drop anchors to get ahead of 1 or 2 cars.
These are the people I am talking about. Why do they do it? They must get some kick out of overtaking breaking cars.

Seems to be the latest driving style, made possible by the fact that modern cars are capable of overtaking like this when in the past they couldn't. My friend described it the best way: dispatching the car in front. People can't just overtake any more, they have to dispatch the car in front, probably because it makes them feel bigger and more powerful by doing it this way because being faster and bigger is a status symbol.
We were sitting there at 80 or whatever in the left hand lane in my friend's Jag and a guy in an Audi did it. Held us up behind a slower car then he pulled back into our lane and slowed down so we were going faster than him. Overtook him, he sees us go past then he did it again. So next time we overtook we sat on his front corner and ran him up behind the car in front when he tried to outrun us. His girlfriend was raging and slapping him in the car, we were laughing our heads off. People drive like they've got way above themselves and sometimes you just need to put them in their place.

I absolutely adore speed and going fast, it's exciting. It could be that..
Why does it bother you so much? Are you one of these idiots who flash their lights at cars that overtake them?
God no. I think Johnny69 explained it best. I'm just trying to understand why drivers zoom past then sit in front of you. Also, if I overtake a car they see it as a challenge and start racing me - as if they are trying to prove something.
