what arma 2 patches are needed ?

Just apply the latest, make sure you download either the Steam or Retail.
Ace 2 mod is awesome, complete overhual of content pretty much but it can be a pain in the ass to install and keep updated if you have router issues with ports etc, it get updated nearly every day which is also a damn pain.
Lots of community coop maps, just check the official forum complete mod sections, pick your fancy.
