Im a old backup exec user currently still using 10.5 (pre symantec) to shift all of my data to LTO3 tapes.

I currently backup the old way with agents over the network this includes backing up all of my virtualized environment.

I have a HP Blade setup in a c7000 chasis and a EVA 4400 all fibre attatched.

I have recently aquired another shelf of slower SATA storage and a HP FC dual LTO4 tape device.

while im not the person who will be setting all this nice stuff up i am in charge of backing the stuff up.

I will be / have been told i am to use VCB along with Vranger backup software we purchased as a suite with our inital virtualization solution.

My dilema is how to get the data from my nice cheap (LOL) sata disk shelf to tape. I have a DL380 in the fabric aswell as my tape drive.

But do i use backup exec or is there something cheaper, quicker better out there ? it seems a little overkill to me to buy another 12.5 licence + extra tape option just to churn snapshoted data to tape.

I have budgeted arround £1200 based on quotes for the backup exec software so any help would be greatly appreciated.

We use a combo of commvault and vRanger.

All you need is software that can define backups with before and after jobs, if you have that you're laughing (and can back up over fibre).

The before job will run your vRanger task to backup to disk, your backup job will back that up, and the after job is to delete the backup from disk (If you want).

The other requirements for vRanger are that your backup server has a partition on the SAN, that all the ESX hosts can see, and it should have the same LUN ID for all of them.

If you have any problems with vRanger ask away, but their support forums are great and will solve 99% of problems. The other 1% a call to their helpdesk will resolve.
