1. Sorry for my imperfect English - it's not my native language.
2. My mobo has onboard optical sound output (S/PDIF).
What variant is better for sound and CPU:
a) the S/PDIF output + an external decoder + an amplifier + speakers 2.1 (for the small room).
b) USB 2.0 output + an external sound card + the same amplifier + the same speakers 2.1.

What can you recommend for music and films, no games?

Thank everybody.

I would go with option (a) and look for a DAC like the Music Fidelity VDAC or any other similar Dac as the converter part of the chain. The Dac though will only give 2 channel.

If you ever wanted 5.1 etc the dac would not be able to reproduce this. The MF has two inputs digital in and usb so can be used which ever way round you like. It's one of the best purchases I have made and works really well.

Have you tried feeding the digital out straight into your amp into the digital in to see how it sounds? Does it have optical in?

The main problem is decoder.
Any DAC cannot decode DTS, for example.
How can I decode the digital output before putting it into DAC?
