Hello,

My dad just spotted a bird in the garden and it looks like it's eating something. It flew under a bush near a hedge row so I can only see its legs and body. He thinks its some kind of hawk.

Red talons, white chest and darkish brown body. About the same size as a magpie but with an obvious hawk-like shape. It wasn't scared off like most local birds are when a magpie landed near it.

I've done a quick google but cannot find much in the way of hawk with red talons. We have a fair amount of fields around us so it's probably after the mice.

I'd be interested to know what kind of bird it was though. Shame I didn't get chance to grab a camera.

my guess would be a kestrel. I remember years back at my old house we had one in the garden....it was sitting on another bird tearing it to pieces :D

As above, the Sparrowhawk seems to fit your description:

I was under the impression that Sparrowhawks weren't to be found in this country, which would make your bird a kestrel most likely.
