Im building a new system based on a 930 chip which I plan to overclock. What I would like to know is what board can I use which is available now that will also support Conroe when I upgrade later in the year?

Many Thanks

Theres a couple of choices..

Asus
Asus P5W DH Deluxe WiFi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Price: £149.95 (£176.19 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Asus P5B Deluxe WiFi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Price: £134.95 (£158.57 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Asus P5B (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Price: £99.95 (£117.44 Including VAT at 17.5%)

DFI
DFI Infinity 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Price: £129.95 (£152.69 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Intel
Intel DP965LT 965 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Price: £74.95 (£88.07 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Intel Extreme D975bx-304 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (BAD AXE)
Price: £139.95 (£164.44 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Gigabyte
Gigabyte GA_965P_DQ6 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Price: £159.95 (£187.94 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Abit
Abit AB9 Pro (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Price: £114.95 (£135.07 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Abit AB9 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Price: £99.95 (£117.44 Including VAT at 17.5%)

MSI
MSI 975X Platinum V2.0 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Price: £129.95 (£152.69 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Thats all that i can think of and what overclockers have :)

As you plan to overclock as you sure the intel board will allow this? as I seem to remember older intel boards didn't allow overclocking - maybe this is why it's cheaper than the rest?

The Intel extreme 975x Bad axe allows overclocking. Im not sure about the 965 intel board though

My first reaction is to order that board too obviously because of price but I dont really trust Intel even if Iam using their cpu again after 8 years.

DFI is my bet at present but its too pricey really so I'll just keep watching for now.

One option not mentioned is the Asrock 775twins Revision 2. Its something like 50 all in. There is no vcore voltage adjust as standard though you can solder in some wires and a variable resistor I think I read.

Asrock are related to Asustek

I thought asrock were built by some ex-asus people?
I wouldnt trust asrock with overclocking at all and not everyone is willing to solder and modify there boards

No they dont overclock much without mods, though conroe will overclock without any voltage increase to some extent I think.

The idea is they are cheap boards for anyone who wants to wait for something else or only wants simple performance. One board they do combines AGP and DDR1 with conroe capability

I would have to think twice about the soldering but then the board is cheap and cpu damage is still unlikely

How long do you guys think it will take to distill which board or boards are best for overclocking? I want to do a Conroe system but I don't want to be a mobo guinea pig. I'd rather get one that is established in its abilities.

Intel Extreme D975bx-304 975X does seem to overclock well - but I expect there will be other good boards for a lot less than the Intel flagship by Sept.
