What broadband option to choose

Just moved house and have a choice of how to get broadband.

Pre-requisites - Need a static IP with a reasonable usage policy

We are in a cable area or can get an ADSL connection (the local exchange is unbundled so we could get BeThere)

Virgin Media - We would have to get a business account (for the static IP). Cost £99 install, £30pcm (4M down/512K up), £10pcm for fixed IP. (Ex VAT)

Total first year cost: £680 inc VAT

ADSL - We need to have a BT line fitted - £125 then £24 connection fee and £22 per month for upto 24M down 2.5M up (We are 600m from the exchange). (Inc VAT)

Total first year cost: £438 inc VAT

How on earth do VM expect us to go for their service ? Is cable that much better (being all digital) than ADSL ?
 
the cable network is superior full stop due to having fibre laid to the cab then coax cable to your premises which is less prone to interference and wheather conditions. Cable can also deliver far greater speeds than adsl at present.
But if you are looking at BT based solutions for broadband then be* or any enta reseller like titanadsl ukfsn ect ect are a good bet. http://www.ispreview.co.uk/review/top10.php
 
Cable should offer the best but as its run by a company without any leadership from either the board or MD down the chances of it being better than o2/Be are anything but good. I would suggest paying BT for line connection £125 ish and then getting 02/BE - check their individual costs and what is offered. Basically the only thing that differs is the price and the letter head. If joining click through www.quidco.com and get a bung back.

This is what frustrates me - the technically superior solution is limited by overpriced and limited services.
 
I have been with Be* for about 7 months now, very happy with the service and it has always been quick and reliable.

I live about 500m from my exchange and get nearly the full 24mbit sync downstream and full 1.5mbit upstream.

Customer service is pretty good and they always give plenty of advanced notice if there is going to be any maintenance work that might affect your connection.

Only thing is that the supplied router is a bit basic and full of security holes, these are easily patched although a cheap Netgear for £50 seemed to be a lot less hassle for me :)
 
Went for Be and it all went in with no hitches. Currently 17M down 1.2M up using a netgear DGFV338 router.
