Hey guys, at my work there creating a new design department, now this is a marketing and advertising company and the new department will produce CAD drawings for exhibition stands, my boss asked me what software I would recommend (I’m in the creative department and have CAD skills). I have always used Solidworks whenever doing CAD, so I suggested that, but is that really suitable? I mean I won’t be doing any of the CAD or design as there going to hire a load more staff for it.

So what software would you suggest? They’re going to want to do photorealist models, and create a parts library of the fittings and such that they stock and reuse?

Solidworks works a treat, although it is more based toward engineering.
No idea what photorealistic rendering is like on it though.

hmm, Thats what I thought, not something you would typically use for that sort of thing.

fyi, solidworks has a wonderful little plug in thats creates great renders, cant remeber its name tho

Solidworks for engineering and design stuff, rendering in it isnt too bad either.

For pure rendering and creative stuff i'd use 3ds max.

Used both professionally in the past, both excellent at what they do :)

I have used Solidedge (part of solid works I believe) and NX4/NX5.

Both essentially do the same (the only different features are relevant to pros), but both with cost biiiiiiiiiiiig £££. Get whichever us cheapest!

Edge is nothing to do with Works.

Edge and NX are both Siemens UGS owned.
