Hi all, I know that this is a little long off, but I'm one of those people that likes to plan ahead.

In Feb im off to New York and plan on visiting a certain photo som on Manhattan :) to purchase some new gear.

I currently have the following:
Canon 40D
Canon 50mm F1.8
Canon 24mm F2.8
Canon 17-85mm EF-S IS
Canon 70-300mm IS
Canon EX580

What do I shoot?
Well, all things really, portraits, cityscapes and events, not to mention weddings.

What am I after?
Well, there is one thing i DEFINATELY WANT, the Canon 70-200 F2.8 L IS.
I was also looking at the Canon 7D or the 5D MKII, and possible the 17-40 F4 L.

So my question to you is this, what would you go for?
Looking at the lenses first, I'm not happy with the 17-85 EF-S, the pics arent sharp at all and tbh i rarely use it now as i use the 50mm or the 24mm for the sharpnes sand teh DOF.

the 70-200mm would replace the 70-300mm, better on all levels. The 17-40 I thought would make a really good walk about lense, I know i wont caver all ranges up to 70mm with this lense, but with the 50mm as well i think i will cope. The alternatce is teh Canon 24-105mm F4 - but i fear on teh 7D body it wouldn't be wide enough for the cityscapes I like to shoot.

Body wise, I really cant find a good comparision between the 7D and the 5D MKII. Why do I want a new bosy - well, i just do, I am a gadget fiend and been saving a fair bit. the 7d has a nice new AF system and 19 cross points. The 5D MKII has FF, which i have never had before so im not sure if I need this or not.

I know I need to get into a shop and have a play with these bodies to see which i prefer, but i would like others thoughts on what i should go for.

Many thanks in advance

Or just stick with the body and pickup a nice UWA angle lens like a tokina 11-16 or cheaper 12-24, or look at the canon 10-22.

Little point going up to the 7D to be honest.

If you do go up to 5D remember that you may well need to keep the 70-300 given you'll be going from 112-480 equivalent to 70-200, very different focal ranges, or at least get a teleconverter for the 70-200 as well.

Personally I found the 7D much better for my needs than the 40D\50D that I had. I need the fast AF though, which is my driving requirement. Also I find the ISO better, the 7D is still noisy but it retains a tad more detail. It also had micro adjustment which can be handy.

The 5DmkII is a camera I'd also like, but whilst it has a solid centre AF point, the outer AF points are apparently not as reliable especially with AI Servo AF mode. Now I say apparently as I haven't used one extensively. Derek W on here uses one for football though. The detail in shots from the 5DmkII is greater than that from the 7D, even though the 7D has a higher pixel density (that is actually also a bit of a drawback as any slight movement will show up, especially at 100% view). You get the FF benefit of improved ISO (due to larger sensor) and also the nicer rendering of bokeh and depth of field.

You get video with both bodies, just don't expect it to be easy to use!

The 5DmkIII is expected to be announced later this year, but that is just rumour. Hopefully it will have better AF, but again who knows?!

If your body is doing all that you want it to at the moment I wouldn't upgrade it for the sake of it. I'd buy the glass that you need instead :)
